"CNN reports that Beck has recently come out as transgender, and according to the report, she has known she's been trapped in the wrong body since grade school." Well, CNN and Beck, this is false. That Beck was born a boy is a fact. Also, no matter what governments or politicians may say, Beck was Chris Beck in the pre-existance and will be Chris Beck after death, for "Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose" ("The Family: A Proclamation to the World", www.lds.org).

It disturbs me greatly when people, especially Mormons, falsely claim that getting a sex change will make them happy. Only the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints brings true happiness.

@Clark,

For me religion has nothing to do with it. Regardless of religion, this much is true:

A man is a man

A woman is a woman

A man in a dress is a man in a dress

A man who asks a doctor to alter his body is a man who has asked a doctor to alter his body.

Question for those who support people trying to convince us they can truly change their sex:

What makes a male a male?

What makes a female a female?

Those who support sex "changes" can never answer this question, because the only thing they can ever come up with is "whatever you want to be in your mind" which obviously is false.

If my mind is telling me I am a dinosaur, that does not make me a dinosaur.

I ask again:

What makes a male a male?

What makes a female a female?

And how did this "woman" "know" "she" was a "woman"?

What exactly in her personality/behavior made her a woman?

And remember, whatever your answer is must apply to every woman and must not apply to any man.

So what is it?

What do we tell women who do not want men in their locker rooms?

"tough, deal with it?"

And unless we use the biological definition of male/female(which is the only definition in reality), no one can ever tell a man walking into the female locker room that he can't enter.

@Chris B --

"What makes a male a male?"

What do YOU think makes a male a male? Any criterion you want to offer, I bet I can give you a counter-example.

Gender is not nearly as simple an issue as some folks would like to believe. In fact, many babies are born with some degree of ambiguity to their external physical characteristics -- and some may have physical characteristics that completely contradict their genetic composition.

So, Chris -- how would YOU define gender?

@chris b
What determines someone's gender? Gentics, hormones, anatomy, body chemistry, cultural norms, environment etc... And no none of these things can be simply plotted as 100 perecent male or all female in any person in including you.

What you want to do with your life is your own business until it interferes with the lives of others. If you want to wear a dress and pretend your a woman, that is your business until you insist on using womens rooms or female locker rooms. That is the biggest problem with alternate lifestyles. It is not enoigh to be left alone - it always becomes about coercing "acceptance"
