Thank goodness they are actually trying to train the refs. Far too often on a week to week basis we get refs that have different ideas of what the rules are, how to apply them, and how to deal with situations. The ASA umpires that do traveling league softball in the summer are trained better, and are far better and more consistent than some of the UHSAA refs are. And they get paid FAR less as well.

If we are going to be forced to pay what we do, we MUST have better trained officials taking that money. They make $98 each plus travel pay for a JV/varsity two game regular season swing. That's usually over $30 an hour. They should be pretty professional to get that kind of pay, don't you think?

And please understand...a lot of them ARE very good, and worth every penny, and more. We just need the state to hold the ones that aren't to that standard as well.

There are not enough good officials to do three man crews, it is time to go back to the two man crew state-wide in both boys and girls.
