Starting off with quotes from a far left think tank is hardly they way to provide credibility to the article. The other issue not addressed is that the US spends far more on K-12 education than many countries who consistently outrank us in educational attainment. The cost of college goes up each year far more than inflation. The graduate school I attended has seen a 400% increase in cost over a time period that salaries have increased by 100%. The real problem is not a lack of political clout by the middle class. It is that we have entrenched bureaucracies that profit from the ever growing education machine and are completely untouched by market forces. Professors are rewarded for publishing papers far more than they are for teaching classes. The education machinery rolls on - right over the students they are supposed to be serving.
