I look forward to reading his thoughts. I'm sure they will be very enlightening.

"That's been one of those lessons where I've learned, 'Never say never,’ ” Mendenhall said.

Never say never...as in "we'll NEVER lose an in-state recruit again"?

Why am I not surprised 2 utes would be the first to comment on an article about Bronco and BYU ? #getalife

Why am I not surprised that the only Indy-WACer commenting on an article about mendenmidmajor and Y had nothing to say about mendenmidmajor nor the Y, but was only focused on U fans? Losing 3 in a row, 8 of the last 11, and the ENTIRE series is still crushing your anguished soul, isn't it AltaHawk?

It's a good thing Twitter restricts the number of characters one may peck out, because roscoe never really had very much to say anyway.

Firstly, I think it's great that Mendenhall is using Twitter, as I think it will help him connect even better with recruits and with the fan base.

Secondly, I think the Ute fans who posted here are pathetic. #obsessedwithBYU #goaway #littlebrothersupnorth

I've never understood why people feel the need to use the rivalry to personally attack individuals.

I've met Bronco Mendenhall before and he is incredibly nice and personable. But people feel the need to attack him and abuse him because he is the head coach of BYU Football?

I am a BYU fan and truth be told I think Kyle Whittingham is a terrific coach. Honestly I can't think of a better man to coach the UofU team.

I doesn't matter who you are or who you support showing respect for someone and what they have accomplished should be a given. Its kind of ridiculous that I even have to write this. People feel because the internet can hide their identity they can act anyway they please. I dare you to meet Bronco one time and tell me you don't like him and would speak to him in the manner you show on these comment boards.

re: naval vet

Hang on to those stats. They'll keep you warm as you suffer through another losing season next year. You might want to start looking for a new HC along with a new AD. So sorry that you don't even have women's gymnastics to beat your chest about this year.

I love that Bronco is willing to add a little more insight to the BYU football team that we wouldn't otherwise get. Maybe kyle will follow Bronco's lead once again like he does with offering football recruits.

And what is crushing your soul? That the only football news is about BYU?
Why am I not surprised that 3 of the first 4 comments are BYU haters. They hate BYU so much they spend more time on BYU then their own team. Just proving my point many years ago Vet, that a large percentage (20% to 25%) of Utah fans really just haters of BYU not really fans of Utah.

navelvet is still trying to rationalize how a program that has so completely "dominated" BYU head-to-head, has itself been so completely dominated by BYU nationally and in the last half century.

Here's a clue.

Since 1962 (51 seasons) when BYU and Utah helped create the WAC and started playing in a conference that still exists today:

National Championships
BYU 1 > Utah 0

Heisman Trophy Winners
BYU 1 > Utah 0

AP Top 25 Finishes
BYU 17 > Utah 5

Conference Championships
BYU 23 > Utah 6

Head-to-Head
BYU 29 > Utah 22

Bowl Appearances
BYU 31 > Utah 16

Overall
BYU 402-209-4(66%) > Utah 318-262-4(55%)

Unfortunately for U, there aren't many fans still alive who remember watching that exciting 5-5 Utah team win the last of Utah's pre-WAC conference championships.

btw, ranked bowl opponents (both polls)
BYU 16 > Utah 4

Bronco may only be 3-5 versus Kyle, but, Bronco has more Top 25 finishes, more Top 15 finishes, more conference championships, more bowl games, more winning seasons, an overall better record, and has finished with higher national rankings 5 of the 8 seasons during the Bronco/Kyle era. Kyle has 2008, and little else.

Can we limit NV to Twitter. Ah, well, it doesn't matter. A comment headed with Naval Vet is code language for "there's nothing worth reading here, folks. Move along."

I too would relish the opportunity to get insights from Bronco direct because, unlike most of the pro-Utah posters who regularly post on BYU articles, as well as some of our own Cougars In Name Only, I beleive Bronco to be an honest man. I would trust his input.

I hope he doesn't READ them though. Somehow, I suspect comments aimed at him could become caustic. Go figure!

_____

Yet with all of the stats you posted. No power conference has officially invited BYU to join them in all that time.

Colorado owns BYU
San Jpse St. owns BYU.

Perhaps when you have better records against them, the Big Sky Conference will take you.

Typical childish name calling to go along with your typical clueless drivel.

It's laughable that you're so obsessed with a team and coach that you try so hard to pretend is irrelevant.

Dude! Why are you tracing your stats back to 1962? Why not go all the way back to when college football began?

Head to Head:

Utah 56
BYU 34
Tie 4

Bowl Record:

Utah 13-4
BYU 13-17-1

Conference Championships:

Utah 24
BYU 23

Overall Record:

Utah 628-435-4 (.588)
BYU 484-369-26 (.565)

Gotta love Cougie fans and their selective stats that they bend to put in their favor. If your tracing stats that go back a half a century, you might as well trace them all the way back to the beginning. Utah OWNS U Cougies!

"Why are you tracing your stats back to 1962? Why not go all the way back to when college football began?"

Because NOBODY, except for a few kids on the hill, cares about Utah's ancient football history against teams like the Crescents, YMCA, Salt Lake High, Diamond Butchers, the 9th Cavalry, Carlisle Indian School, and the All Hallows.

Football at BYU was little more than a club sport from 1922 to 1961. Because BYU didn't even have their own football stadium for most of that time period, 30 of the first 40 games in the series were played at Utah. Unfortunately for U, during Utah's "glory days", the Utes did absolutely NOTHING on a national scale.

Pre-WAC

National Championships - 0

Heisman Trophy Winners - 0

National Individual Award Winners - 0

Top 25 Finishes - 0 (Utah didn't even crack the AP Top 25 until 1994)

Bowl Games - 1

Then, in 1962, BYU decided to start taking football seriously, building their own stadium, and joining with Utah to create the WAC.

Utah won their first WAC title in 1964.

BYU won their first conference championship in 1965.

Since 1965, BYU has won 22 conference championships; Utah only 5.

Gotta luv Ute fans and their meaningless ancient history.

It took the Utes over a hundred years of playing football to crack the AP Poll for the very first time.

AP Top 25 Finishes

Prior to 1994
BYU 12
Utah 0

During the bcs era
BYU 5
Utah 4

During the Bronco/Kyle era
BYU 4
Utah 3

"If your[sic] tracing stats that go back a half a century, you might as well trace them all the way back to the beginning."

BYU doesn't need to trace its stats back to 1922; the Cougars have accomplished far more on a national scale during the last 40 years, since 1972, when LaVell become BYU's head coach, than the Utes have accomplished during their entire 119 years of playing football.

Dude, not sure what you're using as the source for your stats, but you should stop using Utah stats dot com for BYU's stats, they're not even close to accurate.

Overall Records:
BYU 530-388-26 (58%)
Utah 628-435-31 (59%)

Unfortunately, Utah's leather helmet era record has been steadily losing ground to BYU during the last half century, while BYU has soared ahead of the Utes.

Overall Records Last 50 Years
BYU 398-203-4 (66%)
Utah 314-257-3 (55%)

btw, how many of Utah's bowl winning teams finished in the Top 25?

bottom line, it's more impressive to have a better overall season and lose to a Top 25 team in a bowl, than to have a mediocre season and beat another mediocre team in a bowl.

Final Top 25 Finishes are proof of that!

You forgot one.

If you are willing to go back to the paleozoic era, then one more stat becomes relevant.

Wait for it, wait for it.

National championships

Utah 0
BYU 1

Thanks, Clark! I really felt like that was missing from the discussion.
