Ernest Hemmingway once said that his greatest pleasure in life was to write on true sentence – and this from a guy who was a 1st rate pleasure seeker. If that is true then John Updike’s life was filled with pleasure. The man has written some of the most insightful and well crafted sentences ever constructed.

I have never been crazy about his novels – although I haven’t read Roger’s Version - but his short stories are sublime.
