Thank you...always appreciate articles on the Doolittle Raiders. Had a chance to speak with Lt. Kappeler and SSgt BIrch a few years ago. My mother's older brother, Sergeant Melvin Gardner, was the tail-gunner in plane number 11, the "Hari Carrier". He survived the Tokyo raid but died in a subsequent mission.

We should also mention the sacrifice made by the Chinese, who paid a terrible price for helping the Doolittle Raiders escape. It is estimated that the Japanese killed 250,000 Chinese civilians while searching for the escaping airmen.
