@idablu"They have 3 guys who feel like they need to carry the team on
their shoulders. They run the transition quite well, but when they are forced to
slow down and run a half court offense, it is often quite chaotic. It works OK
when at least 2 guys are hot, but less than that, against a good team, BYU
can't win."You're right and the problem is guys like
Zylstra, Cusick and Sharp who are supposed to contribute are all reluctant
shooters who struggle with their confidence. Brock has little moments here and
there where he gets fired up and gets really aggressive. When he does, good
things happen for BYU and he often sparks the team to some big runs (see 2nd
half vs Iona). Problem is, like strawfire, it only lasts a moment and then he
fades into the background again. Zylstra routinely plays 30+ minutes
as the starting shooting guard and only takes 3 or 4 shots for the entire game.
That's just unacceptable.
Mr. Harmon, if it's not rocket science, how come it took you all season and
into the post-season to finally state that? You could have written this same
article half-way into the sason. Carlino's consistent production, or lack
thereof, was critical for the team the entire season. If he had played more
consistently and in control, there's no doubt in my mind we would have
gotten into the NCAA Tourney and not the NIT. But, the NIT is where we're
at. Let's make the best of it and notch a win tonight against Mercer. And
let's hope Carlino has another strong game.
playing fantastic ball in part of a game, every now and then, does not make one
a great player. Need a different game plan next year.
Duckhunted, if you are actual Earnest T. Bass than please just use that one
moniker. With a proven track record posting on BYU threads ETB is actually
funny and most cougar fans welcome the over-the-top comments. However, if you
are just another disgruntled troll, please don't waste our time with those
comments... you need to earn that right. Thanks in advance.
Watching the Wichita State-Gonzaga game last night, I saw 2 teams both with
superstars who showed patience, never held the ball, and passed the ball to the
open shot. Granted, Gonzaga lost because of ridiculous shooting from Wichita but
it is clear that successful teams know how to find the open man and don't
have to have guys constantly trying to create their own shot. There are very
few poor shots taken. BYU does NOT play that way. They have 3 guys who feel
like they need to carry the team on their shoulders. They run the transition
quite well, but when they are forced to slow down and run a half court offense,
it is often quite chaotic. It works OK when at least 2 guys are hot, but less
than that, against a good team, BYU can't win. I think BYU would fare much
better if they ran a structured offense with actual plays with more passing and
less dribbling, instead of this NBA style of offense that they seem to have
I find it funny that people like DuckHunted can make comments about BYU. its
obvious that they are Ute fans. So how does it make you feel better to bash on a
team that at least made some kind of postseason play for 8 straight years? What
tourney is Utah in again? I forget.
a couple of turnovers in the first half? Try four or five. Carlino has
everyone holding their breath every time he touches the ball. He will read this
article and think he needs to get 28 points and sink the cougars in the first
Most opposing teams can slow down Brandon OR Tyler by double-teaming and/or very
physical play. If Carlino is also playing well with great passes and shots then
it becomes very difficult to defeat BYU. It would be really exciting to see
Carlino finally be consistent and play really well in the NIT. Against
Washington it did seem like the Cougars played intensely without a lot of
pressure so maybe playing in the NIT helps?
Wow, Duckhunted! Carlino's not bad most of the time, but I certainly
wouldn't consider him as an NBA talent. As a Ute fan (apparent
by your comments on other articles), your basketball standards must have REALLY
fallen over the last few years. You should watch some postseason games to see
some real basketball so you can regain your sense for basketball talent.
Tough match up, although I do not think Mercer has won six straight postseason
games, otherwise they would be in the big dance and would have won their conf
tourney. GO COUGS!!
Carlino would be the starting point guard for every NBA team!!!
they also need to play Winder. He can also help the team especially on defense.
Haws hopefully will not force it too much.
