"...we need to understand that getting rid of suspicion and magic does not
negate spiritual answers or the deep reality of spiritual things."Sure it does. And because of the fear that loss of "spiritual
answers" would threaten the profitable occupations of those mystics,
prophets, sorcerers, magicians, seers, and revelators who had long exploited the
naive, gullible, and desperate masses, these dabblers in "spiritual
things" expanded the notion of spirituality to subsume "emotion".So it is that today, spirituality is merely a euphemism for
"emotionalism" whereby the exploiters continue to claim relevance to the
lives of real human beings -- and demand their "devotion" in whatever
are the contemporary currencies. As knowledge (science) has pushed
suspicion, magic, superstition, supernaturalism, and their mystical
"spiritual" ilk out of the minds of people, it has freed them from
bondage to the conjurers by explicitly negating "spiritual answers".As you look beneath the veneer of "spirituality" you find the
ghosts have been exorcised, the fairies have been evicted, and the human race
must finally grow up and take on the moral and ethical realities of coexistence
on this blue marble.
Using your analogy, we get that you love Linda. But you do not try to force
Linda down our throats. And I assume you would be upset if someone told you you
should stop loving Linda and start loving Betty? Or perhaps that you cannot
marry Linda because it is against their belief system?
How many people on the planet were judged, tortured, or murdered last year
because of their scientific beliefs? Our world without science would be
intolerable; our world without all the religious strife would be much better.
