It is stories such as this that reaffirm my faith in humanity.
And it is stories such as this that prove we need affordable universal health care in this nation.
Kudos to the neighbors. But wouldn't it be nice if this unfortunate man's insurer actually paid his medical bills?
"The best healthcare system in the world............."
One Old Man- This is not an example of why we need universal health care. If we expected the government to come in and save us from all of life's difficulties it would have denied the family the opportunity to sacrifice for each other, and in doing so, build a stronger bond between siblings and parents. It would also have denied the community the opportunity to unite in support for one of their own. That's what SHOULD happen. We shouldn't wait for government to save the day. We should be supporting each other in our families first, then go to our communities, the state, and last of all, the federal government when we're in over our heads.
And I bet he has health insurance. There are things called co-pays and deductibles that his family is trying to cover. Lets just be happy that he is the kind of person who has earned the love of his family and his community and that they are willing to help him when he needs it. That was the point of the story after all.
