I think our Governor is mixed up a little. First, the hunter stopped by Fish & Game would have been stopped, permit or not. The permit would have only expedited the result. As to the bill about brandishing that requires weapons be cased or holstered to prevent making other uncomfortable, a concealed weapon is not only holstered, it's not even visible! I daresay it's hard to be uncomfortable about something you're not even going to be aware of. I think this is more about losing the fees for the permits than anything else. Governor Herbert's argument makes no sense to me.
But will he have the gumption to do what he should do and veto this?
The governor is wrong and he knows these laws on the books for permits are unconstitutional. Every man woman and child have equal rights of the 2nd amendment and the idea of any laws restriction gun posses ion and use is wrong.
The mentally ill and ex-cons all have the same civil rights restorer when released from prison or incarceration, there are no restriction in the bill of rights for a reason, people are the power of the land and country. No man or child can be denied any of those rights for any reason. Treason and traitors and foreign nationals are the exception to rights of liberty and freedoms as declared in other constitutional amendments.
I would rather trust a convicted criminal in war than a coward who thinks we don't have or need rights.
@My2Cents
"Every man woman and child have equal rights of the 2nd amendment and the idea of any laws restriction gun posses ion and use is wrong."
So based on the 21st amendment every man woman and child has the right to buy beer too right?
Seriously, there was a debate if it wouild be reasonable for someone to feel uncomfortable seeing someone enter a movie theater with an assault rifle? Has the argument gotten that silly? You don't expect people to raise an eye when someone next to them at a resturant places a loaded 45 on theei table.
I think it far more reasonable for someone to be worried following a parent into school carrying a loaded weapon than for an adult to think they need to carry a side arm to school to pick up Jr...
And I own plenty of weapons... but I am not bringing my assult shotgun to the grocery store to fight off bad guys in the dairy section... I would be freaked out just a bit if I saw a shopper with a like gun in the milk cooler at Costc.
It's apparent from the arguments presented here, that many people don't even know what the constitutional carry bill is about. It's not about carrying full sized rifles or shotguns into theaters or grocery stores. It's not about taking on "bad guys in the dairy section." It's also not about misrepresenting the 21st amendment's repeal of the 18th amendment being equated with letting children buy alcohol. It's about not requiring a permit to carry concealed, period.
This is what's wrong with political debate in this country today. Instead of making reasoned argument, people make outlandish statements and demonstrate their lack of knowledge on the focus of the subject.
The Constitutional Carry issue is about good guys having to get a permission slip to carry a legal self defense tool.
The bad guys don't care, and don't bother with "no stinking permits!"
So, the current permit requirement does nothing to disarm criminals, only good guys.
Constitutional carry is not some crazy idea filled with unknown danger and promoting random gunfire. Vermont has had this forever, Alaska for 10 years, Arizona for 3 years and Wyoming for 2 years with ZERO problems. And, other states are considering adopting it too.
Gov. Herbert, trust the law abiding citizens of Utah who voted for you!
Opponents and their arguments are the same used against forcing issue of concealed carry permits in 1995. 18 years of actual data prove the critics were totally wrong then, and they are totally wrong now.
Pass Constitutional Carry, and let the good guys defend themselves if they choose to.
To "atl134" where is the right to beer spelled out in the constitution?
It does not make me feel safer to know that any paranoid, untrained person who can fog a mirror can carry a gun. And if you think you need to carry a gun around with you so the Boogey Man won't get you, you are paranoid.
There is nothing wrong with the permit system. I'm glad that Herbert (who has been generally awful) can see that we need to leave well enough alone. The system is reasonable, and that's how it should be. It's not too extreme in either direction.
@ ETT :
There must be more to the story of why a Rep form Vernal wants to get this passed. He says afriend of his was stoped and harrased by the Fish and Game. So what i am haveing trouble with is why did he need a concealed wepon any way? Was he worryed that a herd of wild eyed deer was going to attact him? Or was he afraid some one was going to mug him or breakin to his camp on the mountain. Or may be he just wanted to feel bigger that he was. Do you have any of these answers? Me neither.
