I'm glad the Suttons are alive and recovering now. I wish them all the best in a speedy, full recovery.
I hope that in their future lives they will take many opportunities to speak to public and private groups about what they learned from this experience, and what nearly-fatal mistakes they made: Let's see... where do I start? ... According to the article-- No emergency beacons, no GPS or maps?, dead mobile phone (with no backup or charging system), no? firemaking supplies ($10 of supplies might have saved their $10K machine!!), etc? etc?
I've been teaching Wilderness Medicine, Wilderness Survival, Backpacking, Camping and Hiking classes many years now. I am forever puzzled and flustered at how totally unprepared SO many people are --everywhere, and all the time-- when heading into the outdoors or wilderness for hikes, snowmobiling, ATV rides, etc.
But again, best wishes to Mr. Sutton and son!
