Yes, once again the two teams from up North have bowed out in the first round. Thanks so much to the UHSAA for lumping us in with the charter schools who can barely field girls sports teams. It makes for many region titles but very few wins at the state tourney.
Whoever decided that one game in a season makes you or breaks you for a chance at the State Championship needs to have their brain examined. Every team can have a bad game. I am proud of the NSHS Girl's Basketball team. A 13-0 win record should mean something. I can see 5th and 6th place teams playing to get into a tournament, but not a first place team out on one loss in the season. Parawon played a good game, but would the outcome be the same if they met again?
These "play in" games ARE the first round of state! If you lose the first round it does ruin your chances at a title, regardless of whether or not you get to continue to play in the consolation bracket. Just because a team has a good record in an arguably weak region (as noted above), doesn't mean they deserve a given shot at the title. The PHS Lady Rams have battled through a tough, physical region. They were the better team in this match up, even as a 4 seed. Who knows what would happen if they met again? Such is the nature of athletics. Although, personally, I didn't think NS had anyone who could stop Benson.
