What a blast from the past! Please keep him in there. No reason for him to see
the light of day again.
There is far more to this story can could be told in the newspaper. The Singer
family, wherein the saga began, suffered extreme persecution for their beliefs
and commitment to home school their children. At one point an agreement was made
that a recognized education professional would evaluate the Singer family
children. The professional's evaluation was that the children were being
well educated at home, and that their social skills were excellent. However, the
persecution continued and violence followed. I think Addam Swapp should be
released so he has a chance to be a productive member of society.
They need to keep all these criminals in prison.
The story doesn't mention that the whole Singer thing started over home
schooling. How times have changed.
He killed a Utah State law enforcement officer. Fred House's family will
never enjoy a moment of Fred's warmth as a father or as a husband. Why
should he be granted the warmth of his family when to ripped Fred away from the
family he loved and protected. Fred was serving us, the citizens of Utah, when
Addam Swapp was responsible for his death. He should never be given the
opportunity to enjoy what he destroyed for others. Please keep him in prison.
I believe in second chances.
Nan,that's why the Swapps shot at federal agents? When Fred House can again see the light of day, then let Addam Swapp out of
I lived in Kamas during the time that John Singer homeschooled his kids. He
came to our house several times to fix our tv (he was a television repairman)
and sometimes brought his kids with him and a couple of times we went to his
compound to drop off or pick up our tv. I certainly recall the education level
and social skills of Singer's kids' differently than Nan does -- and I
say that as a homeschooling parent myself. Singer brought most of his problems
on himself through his fanatical beliefs.
One old manYour statement is not only inapropriate it is a complete mis
charachterization of the past and the present.
This was at a time when polygamists were viewed by most, through the same glass
as mainstream Mormons (just a tiny bit more extreme). John Singer was an
embarrassment. Anyone who lived through this knew that the Singers were being
trapped in their home over home schooling and the Highway Patrol were pushed to
act. Bottom line, the Singers were a strange family who made the mistake of
getting noticed. The killing of John Singer was unnecessary.
To Beverly. Addam Swapp did not kill fred house. Timothy Singer was charged with
killing Fred house when he was shooting at the attack dogs sent after Addam.
To Zadruga Guy. You can homeschool your kids without harrasment from the state
of Utah because of the stand that John Singer made.
Oneoldman; all I can do is parrot a lot of other comments i see on these boards
at different times: documentation, documentation, documentation.
Keep in mind that John Singer died one year after another religious fanatic
convinced his wife and children to jump off a hotel in downtown SLC. A sense of
trying to stem the harm that non-mainstream parents can do to their spouses and
children permeated law enforcement and the judiciary, and that horrible event
was fresh in everyone's minds.
Everyone has the right to their own religious beliefs. What you people dont
underwtand is that John Singer was murdered. He was shot in the back.
This isn't "news" it's speculation.
I know people that remember John Singer said he had some peculiarities. I
don't think homeschooling and polygamy cost him his life. Tragic for what
he went through. Most polygamists I think are off. DAvid Koresh and Warren
Jeffs did much harm to people in compound using religion. However if
they are not harming anyone I would say leave them alone. HOmeschooling may
have been permitted when Singer lost his life. However even homeschool people
have to answer people in the department of education to see the kids are up to
par with people who go to school. That may be why people from State were there.
Police never want to take a human life so I am sure more than seeing that his
kids were taught right caused what happened. As for standoff later I
was in grade school when it happened. Bombing a church and not allowing someone
to see his kids grow up that is crime and him getting out not fair to his
victims who lost someone close to them. Whoever is responsible for death
shouldn't be let out.
Second chances come in heaven. MaybeBut not here on the earth.
IMO John Swapp's comments are not helping Addam's case.
@JohnSwapp,The siege was a result of Addam's decision to blow
up a church. He hasn't served 25+ years as a result of a stray bullet that
killed an officer. He served 10 years for blowing up the church. He will only
serve 15 years max for the death of Lt. House.
If schooling was the complete issue and Adam Swapp brought Utah into the
homeschooling business then that isn't publicized much in the alternative
schooling businesses. Maybe the educational professional found that the Swapps
and Singers weren't really homeschooling their children in a way that would
lead their children to a real education. Education, such as public, would help
them in their lives, such as reading, writing, arithmetic, social behavior,
seeing that there is more to life then just in the potential biased world they
lived in. States are to ensure there is safety and look after the welfare of
children in our state. Children are defenseless and parents and the state are
helping them get to be on their own or as much as possible.Legislators and Governors don't necessarily help with their comments
toward public education in a state filled with administrators and teachers that
have very high abilities, education and a desire to help students with
parent's help to a higher level. Unfortunately, there are a few
inappropriate teachers that make the headlines. We just need to be
more supportive to keep our education more mainstream and not diverted as this
Twenty-five years in prison is a long time for anyone behind bars. We
don't know what has gone on in his life during that time or how he has
changed. (Note: Prison changes everyone. The only question is whether the
change is for good or evil.) For those of us whose religious beliefs include
the idea that men can repent and change them selves, being forgiven in the
process, we would do well to remember that we have little information about him
and how he has changed other than a couple paragraphs in a news story. The
Board of Pardons isn't given to letting people out of prison on a whim, and
has access to a lot more information than we do, including his complete prison
record and the people who have supervised and worked with him. Bottom line:
Should he be released? I have no idea at all, but will defer to the judgment of
those in a position to make such a decision.
The whole problem was not with the home schooling but with John Singer trying to
impose his outlandish beliefs on the whole community.
How delusional some people are to think this was about homeschooling, John
Swapp. It is about a person that set of explosives in a church and then
barricaded himself inside a house and would not respond to police orders. I don't know what it is with some people that think they are above
the law. Where do they get this idea? Nobody is above the law, not even little
Adam Swapp. When the cops have a warrant, when the cops give you an order, you
have to comply. Everyone has to. Everyone has to follow the law. Just because
you fundemetilsts think you are above the law, your not. We don't get to
pick and choose. You have four options if you don't agree with the law: do
nothing; break the law and suffer the consequences; attempt to change the law;
or leave the country. No one forces you to stay here. But in case
you can't figure it out, John Swapp, it is always going to be illegal to
try to blow up a church, and not follow police officers lawful orders.
I never knew the guy but I've followed the story and I think he was a very
confused man that thought he was in the right. He had some truly messed up
beliefs that were wrong but he seems to know that now. The result of
Adams bad choices lead to the death of a police officer. Adam didn't kill
Lt. House and never intended for him to be killed but it happened. So of course
Adam Needed to be punished for these things and he was. But any Christian knows
that those who repent will be forgiven and I believe that the man has
repented. We all make bad choices. In my youth my reckless driving
could have resulted in a death but luckily it never caused any harm. I'm
not saying that what Adam did is comparable to reckless driving but I'm
saying "he who is without sin cast the first stone". Worry about the
beam in your own eye and let this man move past his sin. His heart is in the
right place now; he wants to make things right and he should be allowed that
Addam should be released. Most of you do not know him. I do know him. He has
changed and even Mrs. House has forgiven him. Ask yourself, what would Christ
think and do? All of you so-called Christians need to remember that forgiveness
is one of the primary teachings of Christ. So how can you call yourself a
Christian if you cannot forgive? It is entirely hypocritical to do otherwise. The man has served over 25 years for events he set in motion, directly
and indirectly. He has paid the price. He has been a model prisoner and I would
expect him to be a model citizen once he is released. Again, knowing him, his
family, and other friends, I could not expect anything less from him. One ting I
can tell you is that he is a man of his word, unlike many of the trolls who
espouse opinions on here that truly know nothing about the entire case and what
led to it.
To: John Swapp, it will happen brother, just be patient. Addam will do the right
thing and the State of Utah will do the right thing. It is time for this to
settle out, none of us can change the past, only the future matters.
