A great article. Well written and with good information. Through the years I have battled with various English departments in my children's jr. high and high schools over some of the books to be read in class. When I object the most common response I receive is "But it's a classic!" the next most common response is, "They are in high school and he/she should be old enough to handle it." Weather it is a classic and they are old enough to handle it, and the fact that "Stuff happens", does not mean it is uplifting reading. I have never felt that Of Mice and Men, and Hemingway were valuable contributions to art.
