I'm glad to read that an esteemed writer voices strong support for hiring Detmer for all the reasons mentioned in the article!! Ty knows his stuff would, indeed, "bury the needle" for "wow" impact.
Go get him Bronco and Robert!
My guess is Detmer knows he'd be working with WAC talent with byu fans' demands of BCS success.
Sorry, those two don't match up.
I'd politely decline as well Ty. Good call.
RE: Chris B.
"My guess is Detmer knows he'd be working with WAC talent with byu fans' demands of BCS success."
I don't know if "WAC talent" would be an issue for Detmer, who was awarded the Heisman trophy while playing in the WAC.
@ Chris B
I guess Roderick didn't get that same memo Ty Detmer did. Leaving a "prestigious PAC-12 University" for BYU.
Detmer is happy and same with Danny Ainge. He will not come and if I am wrong, let me know.
It would be a coup for the Cougs to land Detmer. But, realistically, why would he want to work with a plodder like Anae? Does he really want to go on the recruiting trail? Would BYU spend enough money to make the job enticing, and, if so, does Detmer overshadow Anae? I think Anae has had his fill of being overshadowed (i.e. Doman).
No, Chris, but he'd have to put up with the occasional Ute fan who thinks they matter more than they do.
I love the idea of Detmer. Who else has the experience he does and is LDS? Part of a good leader is grooming your successor. Ty could run the whole show some day as easily as Sarkisian or others have done coming up through the ranks. So far our "Wow" factor has been for the wrong reasons. Ty would be a positive one.
My dream would be to have Ty caoch the quaterbask at BYU, but I think that would be up to the OC.
Besides, I think Ty does not want to leave Texas.
I guess we all can continue to dream.
Another great choice that is not available would be Steve Young.
I'm hoping one of these days that sportswriters will be satisfied with actually reporting the news and not speculating what it may, can, could, should or ought to be.
But I guess the Utah trolls need yet another opportunity to bash BYU.....goal accopmlished.....
@kdssoccertodd
Who's reported that Roderick is moving to BYU?
Not to mention opening up recruiting in Texas.
Remember also that some of his kids are near College age and will most likely attend BYU.
Make it happen Anae....
Maybe one day when Steve Young is done with ESPN and doesn't want to use his law degree, he could come here. That would be one of the few cases bigger than getting Detmer. It's also next to impossible on the likelihood scaled.
soccertodd was right. THe other paper reporting Roderick is headed to the Y.
If Ty was part of the coaching staff, we would never lose a game.
Bringing in Detmer would be too big a distraction and overshadow Bronco. If Detmer was hired by Bronco, fans would very soon be calling for Detmer to replace Bronco if the Cougars go 7-5 or worse in 2013.
You it the nail squarely on the head.
Hiring Detmer sounds nice but I doubt it's going to happen. Why?
Detmer is a mellow guy who by all accounts is happy where he's at. Why would he want to give all that up to be an assistanct coach? Money? He doesn't really need it (he could sell his 2,000 acre hunting rance if he wanted cash). Fame? He's already got it. Plus, overshadowing Anae would indeed happen (deservedly so or not) the instant BYU started to lose (if that were to happen).
IF Doman is not re-hired to coach the QBs Anae will hire Max Hall.
Hall has neither a boatload of money or fame (success) and though he may not care about money he sure does want success.
I think Max Hall would be a great fit.
We'll get it figured out.
GO COUGARS!
Why would Ty want to leave Texas and the paradise he enjoys there? In a recent interview he sounded like he is very happy coaching a championship high school team. He never struck me as a person with an ego that would seek such a change. Although I believe his personality would fit the "Coach Edwards" pattern for success at BYU.
With the other "experienced" candidates they've interviewed, no way on Detmer. I don't think there's any way/reason he'd want to leave the very comfortable lifestyle of his ol' Texas home. And Harmon failed to make a credible justification of why such option would even stand a chance. This was a nice low-lying fruit article.
