This reminds of Nancy Pelosi's now famous quote regarding the Obamacare bill when she said (paraphrasing), "We have to pass it in order to know what is in it."

I'm not a personal fan of guns, but I do believe people have a right to own them. I think it is hilarious that this was put into Obamacare. Now if they would only fix the flex acount spending so people, like myself with Multiple Sclerosis, can use it to help pay for their expensive medications.

"However, The Washington Post reports, physician groups and researchers see the provision as part of an ongoing gun lobby strategy to cut off federal support for studies of firearm violence."

The NRA is using its cash and clout to squelch any research that might lead to open dialog about the effects of gun ownership on society. It appears that, while the NRA are obviously big supporters of the 2nd Amendment, they are not such big supporters of the 1st Amendment.

Of course, the people behind Obamacare have a reputation for sneaking things like this into bills. What other surprises are concealed in Obamacare? Revoking your driving privileges could well be there also. We do not know a tenth part it it. Better hold tight to your guns people, your liberties are eroding fast under Obama rule.

CNN's Jim Acosta called the provision "a gift to the nation's powerful gun lobby," and noted that it was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada who inserted the provision.

=========

I quite frankly don't know whether or not I should laugh or cry.

Imagine Harry Reid (D) being the source of protecting the rabid gun-lobby?

Who can they get mad at?
Harry Reid for passing Obamacare,
or Harry Reid for protecting their guns in Obmacare?

Like healthcare, this will rushed down our throats before we can react.

"So we even throw a bone to the conservatives once in awhile. Heck, we'll throw an occasional bone to ANYONE that will help us get this monstrosity passed." And if it wasn't in there, they'd probably use the bill to start mandating gun control as a condition of receiving Federal "health care" dollars.

It seems that in their haste to cram socialized medicine down the throats of the American people, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Barack Obama overlooked Senate amendment 3276, Sec. 2716, part c.

According to reports, that amendment says the government cannot use doctors to collect "any information relating to the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm or ammunition."

CNN is calling it "a gift to the nation's powerful gun lobby."

And according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), that's exactly right. He says he added the provision in order to keep the NRA from getting involved in the legislative fight over Obamacare, which was so ubiquitous in 2010.

Regarding Dr. Gupta's comment. While gathering information on guns may help with research, it can't help but influence the medical staff's opinions on an individual. Healthcare workers are trained to "suspend judgement", in theory that's great, but not all staff do this. Hopefully, this provision will prevent further infringement and censorship into our lives from the Federal Government.

Re: "Hopefully, this provision will prevent further infringement and censorship into our lives from the Federal Government."

Hope springs eternal. But infringement of our rights has become the hallmark of the Obama regime.

Liberals have already suggested an executive order requiring the already heavily-regulated insurance industry to double or triple insurance premiums for "assault weapon" owners. Which, of course violates the very basis of real actuarial principles, since something like nine times as many murders are committed with empty hands, steak knives, ball bats, and other common household items, than with ALL rifles.

But, that's liberals for you. They've never felt constrained by common sense, the needs and desires of others, or the Constitution.

They just want what THEY want. They don't care about what real people want or need.

Read the language of the text closely, it does NOT prohibit any future laws related to Civil Disarmament. If Obama creates an Executive Order or a law is passed by Congress that new language will apply and therefore restrict firearm/ammunition ownership and possession.

The text in the Obamacare Bill only prevents that particular Bill from restricting firearm/ammunition ownership not future laws.

Why is the NRA afraid of studies actually being able to be done effectively on guns in this nation? What facts do they not want to see the light of day?

The FBI already collects and reports gun violence statistics. Go find it.

The provision inserted by Harry Reid was pre-Newtown. The post-Newtown Harry Reid is sounding more amenable to revisiting Federal laws impacting guns and privacy.

@Samaritan01:
"If Obama creates an Executive Order or a law is passed by Congress that new language will apply and therefore restrict firearm/ammunition ownership and possession."

Not to worry. Gun ownership is protected by the Constitution. If it came to the Supreme Court for a decision even nuts and crazies will be allowed to own guns because it says: "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." That's pretty straight forward and all inclusive. I saw a guy being interviewed by Peirs Morgan about gun control who would fit the description of a nut and he owned dozens of guns.

"President Obama administration's health care law includes provision on Second Amendment, guns"

All the more reason to scrap the whole thing.

Any negotiation or compromise with the NRA is a defeat for the safety and morals of civilized society.

Mr. Reid should be ashamed of going to bed with the NRA for whatever reason.

I certainly hope that Vice-President Biden and his commission may come up with common sense suggestions that hopefully can stop the insanity with guns in our country.

You need a revolver to protect yourself, register, have a backgorund check and if you qualify get one.

You need a rifle because you enjoy hunting, register , have a background check and if you qualify get one.

You feel the itch for an assault weapon make an appointment with a psychiatrist. There are other ways to compensate for your deficiencies.

Americans own an estimated one third of the guns on the planet although they account for less than 1% of the world's population. That doesn't exactly augment the fears fanned by some of the more hysterical gun enthusists and encouraged by the NRA that private gun ownership is in dire jeopardy.

CORRECTION TO MY PREVIOUS POST:

It reads as though Americans account for less than 1% of the world's population. What I meant is American GUN OWNERS.

Sorry for the mistake.
