Scoring is not a concern if you have defense. Two early December loses came in
games where 104 and 116 points were scored. It isn't being able to score a
hundred, it is being able to stop the other team and outscore them even if it is
67-66. Not scoring 100 points in a game is a nice point but it doesn't have
a firm foundation. Just consult tonight's 114-116 loss as proof in the
relative pudding! 1) The Jazz did not look bad in losing to the hottest team in
the NBA in 2012.... 2) They need to be more concerned about their crappy defense
than their inconsistent offense.
There is definitely something wrong when novices have to tell "pros" how
to play the game. I watched their video clips about the game tonight and they
all look despondent and unenergetic. I'm surprised they have won 15 games.
They look like a bunch of privates facing an offensive for the first time
without a veteran sargeant to lead them. I don't even know if I can say
good luck to the hapless bunch.
Jazz have to play well on both sides of the floor to try to get at least one win
out of these next two games. The Clippers are averaging 110.5 points per 100
possessions, 4th best in the NBA (Jazz 106.3, 11th) and their defense is
averaging 99.3 per 100 possessions, 2nd best in the NBA (Jazz 107.2, 24th). It
does start on the defensive end, and when you get stops on the defensive end
then your offensive can get easier shots. Something Ty Corbin doesn't seem
to inforce on the young Jazz team enough. The Jazz will have to play
all 48 minutes strong. They don't start off at tip off or out of half time
well and those can be key parts of the game. If you give the other team
confidence at the beginning of the game by letting them get open looks, then
they will find a rhythm and be hot all night. Play lock down defense all game
and you will win lots of games. It's how the Celtics manage to make deep
playoff runs despite having older players and when people count them out.
Defense is a key to a good offense.
The problem seems to be glaring to me, in this entire article about how to fix
the Jazz not once was the word "defense" used. It's not a priority
for Corbin and it's obviously not a priority for the players. Inconsistent
defense is the reason they are slumping, play defense and the offense will come.
