Is the entire country coming unglued?
Old man--
Yes, it is. And, it will only get worse.
These children are the next generation, unfortunately. There are some good ones out there, sure. But it seems like more and more kids are bad. They feel entitled to have everything given to them, to be waited on, they are disrespectful, rude, and inconsiderate. Parents need to start looking in the mirror and make changes themselves. Kids need to stop getting away with everything and running the household. Once this young generation grows up, it could be worse.
Did we all know that this wasn't the worst mass murder of school children in school history? In 1927, a disgruntled gentlemen in Michigan blew up a school, killed over 40 children, two teachers and the superintendent.
What I am getting at is that things happened way before this tragedy. I look at this generation only as a byproduct of what their adults gave them--good or bad. There are a lot of great kids out there doing amazing things, sometimes in spite of the adults who raise them. The brave teachers that gave up their lives in Newton weren't that much older than the gunman. So perhaps we should focus on that.
I also think the media drives much of this. I never even knew about this incident in Michigan 80 plus years ago until this recent incident. But it shows that we do need historical perspective before deciding any generation is "lost" or "bad."
We'd all better brace ourselves. There are an estimated 350 million privately owned guns in the U.S. today, one for every man, woman and child. How many of those 350 mil are assault weapons? I guess nobody knows.
I guess some subscribe to the theory that it is best to arm yourself to the teeth as protection. As the NRA captain says, "The only defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." But in my experience good guys with guns holding off crazed bad guys with guns is extremely rarely, in fact the incidence of this kind of scenario is statistically zero (excluding, of course, the police, military, etc.) What happens instead is the wrong person gets shot, an accident happens. In Utah alone how many such scenarios have we seen in 2012 alone? And then compare this to number of "heroic rescues", of a private citizen good guy holding off and vanquishing the bad guy with the guns.
The scriptures teach us that if we are righteous the Lord will fight our battles and we have nothing to fear, in fact Pres. Spencer Kimball reiterated this in his speech "The False Gods We Worship". On the other hand, if we are wicked and do not serve the Lord, weapons, armaments of every--none of this is going to save us.
Jmason - If god wanted to help, he could have stopped the tragic shooting from happening in the first place. He is all powerful, all knowing, right?
Also, you have every right not to own a gun to protect your family. You don't have any right to tell anybody else not to own a gun, just as gun advocates don't have a right to tell you to own a gun.
Folks....There is a 2nd Amendment. You should read it if your a gun owner, gun supporters, gun hater, or want more strict rules. While reading it remember this......it was written into law in 1791......I think we should absolutely honor this law and our fore fathers by allowing all the guns and technology that people want to have that were available in 1791. Then a crazy person would be able to shoot one shot every 30-60 seconds while waiting to re-load. If I was a thief or person wanting to take away someone freedom, I would be very reluctant to take the one bullet the person had in their muzzle loader.
In other words.....get rid of all guns that were not available in 1791 and we still live up to the amendment. Remember as you think this thorugh.....a nuclear warhead is an "arm" and we can't have them. Use some common sense.
For the record....I was being way too far left on my comment above. I do see some need and even family recreation in "Hunting Weapone".....riles....that have limited rounds and are truly meant for game hunting. I see no need for assualt rifles and hand guns of any type.
Need to start naming names of these kids maybe this will put the spotlight on some parents that need awaking. Most of the past mass shootings have envolved people who needed meds to help deal with life problems. NRA was right about the only way to deal with a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. These shootings are nothing more than a cry for society to wake up.
Sport dude talked about reading the 2nd amendment and missed the most important reason for the 2md amendment about people being able to rise and rebel against an oppressive government. Or and abridged verson writtne by anti gun advocates to muddle the truth and facts.
The 2nd amendment doesn't even mentions sport hunting of putting food on the table, its all about self defense and right of rebellion to topple oppressive government, foreign or domestic illegal occupation, and Obama Care without anyone's permission. Rebellion is something we can do anytime we feel it is necessary to strip government of socialism and communism for any offense to our constitution. The 2nd amendment is a "right of war" to defeat and defend our god given rights and country as written in the first 10 bill of rights.
A right of equal armaments and equal power according to weapons and arms of the day, 1791 or 2013>. Now tell that to a news man or illegal aliens or ban the gun advocate, they will lie and deny its real. Its an eternal vigilance of the peoples rights whether its ray guns or metal projectiles to have equal weaponry.
AmPatriot. Here is the entire text of the second amendment….”A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”.
Not sure where your interpretation come from but…..your argument does not make sense in today’s world. Our government has F22’s, Nuclear Bombs, M1 Tanks, Drones, and numerous other arms they could use against us if they wanted to. How could we defend ourselves against what the government could throw at us with a modern day assault rifle?
I agree with Sports Dude. There is no need for large bullet clips, assault rifles, or even hand guns in a modern USA. All this said…..I voted for Romney and do not like the direction our country is going. However, me having an assault rifle or hand gun is not the way to “attack” this problem. The right/conservation/or center-right group needs to evolve just a little or we will never have a chance to have our voices heard. Your discussion is exactly why we loose.
Your logic is outdated by about 100 years
Could we please get a well researched, definitive study and comparison of the number of gun deaths in this nation and compare it side by side with the number of times that well armed citizens (not police), who happened to be in the right place at the right time, have foiled the attempts of those seeking to harm other citizens? Just put the numbers up there side by side. Let's let America really see all of these valiant rescuers and hear of their dramatic exploits. Please? Just a graph. What's the ratio? ---Okay, here's what. You can throw in the police and any well armed security guards and give examples of when they used their guns to stop a violent, pre planned attack. What do the graph bars look like now? Anybody? I'm guessing the dumb accident/drunken argument shooting bar is still a teeny bit higher, right?
