It is still a little early to be sure, but you have to put Maple Mountain's
team as the best in state right now. They have already taken two of the
toughest tournaments (Ironman Duals and Wasatch Duals) and they have beaten both
of the next best teams (Box Elder by 37-24 and Pleasant Grove by 47-21). I would
also be careful saying that Box Elder is #2 - PG beat them head-to-head at
Wasatch Duals 36-32. Box Elder was missing one starter with injury, but it may
not have mattered as the PG wrestler at that weight is very good.
Looks like MM beat Box Elder up at Wasatch. Wixom knocked off Gunter.
They could/should also meet in the Jaguar Duals in Jan...
They'll meet at the Wasatch Intermountain Duals this weekend in Heber
Where will Box Elder and Maple Mountain Dual this year?
Box Elder has JV ranks as well, they have 3 defending title guys back,They wrestle against Mt Crest who we all know is a top 5 program, so I
believe that region forces Box Elder not to take as many people. But
this year with what I saw from the Bees at the layton tourney, I was excited for
the 4 new guys who won that tourney, to go along with all 3 guys who won state
last year easily winning them selves, and Box Elder had someone in the top 6 of
every single weight class, and won from 130 to 190 every weight class, thats 6
wrestlers in a row! BE and MM should be a fun state tourney,
Box Elder is way good but Maple Mountain has too much depth in the JV ranks this
year, as they ultimately did last year. Varsity vs. Varsity the two stack up
well but it will be Maple Mountain's JV team that makes the difference this
Agfan- Sorry, you are mistaken. MM is the best and they will prove it. I'm
not a fan of the way they have built their program. But you take what the law
allows I guess and hope for the best. East and Timpview had problems with it in
football, and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if the UHSAA actually
cared about wrestling, they would look into the blatant recruiting that they do
at MM. But I know they won't so MM will keep having kids from out of
boundary show up their freshman year like clockwork. Ya, I know it's legal
by the letter of the law. But it's not ethical by any means. Some schools
keep having "open houses" to show off their trophys and facilities.
Others just entice kids by giving mom and dad a place to live closer to their
16 points separated Maple Mountain and Box Elder at state last year. No
disrespect to Maple Mountain but if Box Elder competed in the easy region 8 and
could qualify 25 for state as opposed to 17 from the toughest region, region 5,
Box Elder would have taken state. To me, Box Elder is the best team in all the
state regardless of classification.
Thanks for the wrestling coverage. Box Elder is probably the second best team in
the state regardless of classification but unfortunately they are in 4A with
Maple Mountain. But those two teams appear head and shoulders above anyone else
in the state.
