Orem got the shaft on this one. Killed the rivalry between Orem and Provo schools. Now we get to look forward to playing someone called Corner Canyon and SPA instead of the schools literally two miles away in Timpview and Provo? Yeah no controversy there. This stinks.

Payson in with St George schools and Canyon View in with schools much farther north? Stupid! Put Payson with the Sanpete schools and Juab, and leave Canyon View with the southern schools. So silly. So much gas money!

Wasatch will get killed in football in 4A, and only be competitive in a few sports. I think some other schools in 3A are probably biggerbut always whine about competing against bigger schools. Wasatch never complains about who they have to play and will eventually catch up to most 4A schools in sports. The next few years will be ugly for Wasatch sports teams, with very few even qualifying for State Tournaments.

Sounds right..

Manti Coug... Payson is with Juab North Sanpete Richfield and carbon in all sports but football. Because they are in the Big Classification for football they play in the south but not in all sports. Canyon view is in the smaller 3A football and the only team from down south in it therefore they must play with the North Schools. Overall I thought the re alighnment went very well and most schools seem very satisfied.

goforit- you are probably right about Wasatch. I think they will hold their own in wrestling, but outside of that it's going to take awhile to build to the 4A level. I mean, I can't even imagine them playing Timpview in football. Football and Baseball are the two sports they have never won a title in, and I think that the odds just got worse in those two sports. I'm glad they left PC alone, although I wonder how Judge went 4A but still plays 3A football? This new region for Wasatch will be alot better for travel though.

3A wrestling just got wide open. Delta moves down, Wasatch moves up, it's anyone's title now. I guess Uintah would be the natural favorite, but Bear River, Morgan, Hurricane now have a chance.

@Sounds right...I know that Payson only plays in that division in football. It still seems like a gigantic waste of money to have a school from Cedar City not be in the Southern Utah region for football. The gas budget alone will be huge! The UHSAA worries too much about everyone winning and not enough about natural rivalries. Canyon View and Cedar won't even be in the same classification for football! Canyon View needs to man up and play the schools in their area.

All the rural schools (Juab, Manti, North Sanpete, Delta, Gunnison, Millard, Beaver, etc...) should be in ONE CLASSIFICATION! 2A.

In football I think the four teams that will battle for the region title and playoff spots are Timpview, Maple Mountain, Spanish Fork, and Wasatch. The other schools seem to be having a down spell.

This will be a pretty fun baseball region with SF, MM and Salem.

Wrestling will be Maple Mountain of course, but Salem and Wasatch are in the hunt for second.

Just for clarification. Viewmont is back in Region 1 so that region did not stay the same as was stated in the article. If you want the real skinny, just go to the UHSAA website were the proposed regions are posted.

For football, this was a bad move in my opinion. Depending on what happens with play-offs, we could have more blow outs than before because it looks like more teams will qualify. Before 5A, 4A and 3A each got 16 teams in to the play-offs with 2A getting 12 and 1A getting 8. If 3AA and below follow precedence, they will each get 12 teams in except 8 for 1A. 8 more playoff teams will result in 60 point blow outs, but as long as we give every team an opportunity to compete, right? Big mistake in my opinion adding the 6th classification

UTOutlaw...you may be right about blowouts, but now that the classes are theoretically more balanced, maybe the first round games will actually be more competitive?

MantiCoug...you just ignored about 20 rural schools that are FAR smaller than Manti, do you really want to pound on Milford and the other rural 1A schools by making them go 2A? Or did you mean that you don't think Manti can compete in small 3A football, and you want to go back to 2A?

BTW...in past years, Duchesne has beat 8 of the 2A teams, 3 of the teams in the new 3A, and one of the 3AA teams...so you should be fine in 3A.

Orem Parent, you used to be in a Region with Alta, Hillcrest, Brighton and Jordan back in the 90's. Besides, you can still schedule those "Rivalry" games as preseason games.

Payson and Spanish Fork used to be in a Region with Cedar and Dixie a while ago too.

I love the new regions in 5A. Jordan still stays in tact woth Alta which all of us still consider them rivals. yes Alta even if you dont like it a lot of people conisde Jordan and Alta rivals even if you guys dont and even if the football side has been way lopsided over the years. Bingham added to the region will prove that Jordan finally belongs with the big football schools such as Bingham. Gonna love Bigham coming to Jordan every other year now. A solid region which will be super compettive. Jordan, Alta, Bingham, even Brighton produces good football teams each year. Hillcrest back to 5A though? I thought they complained they werent competitive enough, but whatever...

@Rural sport fan - No no no, that's not what I mean. The small schools (Duchesne, Rich, Milford, etc...) should stay in 1A. Maybe even some of the really small 2A schools (North Sevier, Parawon) should go to 1A at least for football.

But Manti and Juab and North Sanpete and Richfield etc, should all be in 2A along with Millard, San Juan, North and South Summitt, etc. I think Manti or Juab is closer in competitiveness and fairness to Beaver or Millard than they are to Pine View and Dixie. If Manti wins a state championship I want it to be over our peers. Rural schools. I'm glad they won the 2A championship this year, but I'd rather win it knowing that we beat North Sanpete and Juab. The 3A and 3AA classification is silly. They could leave the way it was, but move the rural schools to 2A.

And I know Manti can compete in 3A. Don't forget that Manti tied for the region championship their first year in 3A.

Did that make sense?

Wasatch is thrilled to be in the new 4A region! Park City has been a great rival and many Wasatch teams will continue to play them in non-region contests. Giving up a great rivalry for region play is sad, however, the rivalry will continue as there is a lot of respect for each other. I hope Orem and Provo still continue to play each other. Play each other once in non-region and then you have the chance to renew the rivalry in post season when that second game will be really significant.

Maybe the Utah County schools will take Wasatch too lightly. Don't underestimate the Wasps! Several of their programs already play 4A and 5A schools in non-region contests. The coaches know many Utah County coaches since a lot of their kids are playing with Utah County kids on outside of school teams. Wasps don't whine, they STING! Can't wait for the excitement and short travel plans!

MantiCoug - Manti will be playing with their peers. They are not going to be playing the St. George schools in football. If I read the article right the 3A consists of: Carbon, Emery, Grantsville, Judge, Morgan and Union in one region and Canyon View, Delta, Juab, Manti, North Sanpete and Richfield in the other.
The St. George schools are all in the 3AA division.
I think that puts Manti playing with schools closer to their size rather than playing schools like N. Sevier, Gunnison, N, Summit, and Millard.
BTW, congrats on 2 in a row state football titles in 2A. Looking at your competition next year I really think you can win it in 3A as well (and you can win it knowing you beat North Sanpete and Juab).

NH transplant- Ya, the travel aspect is actually one of the bright spots of this move for Wasatch. Not having to drive to the Basin several times a year will be way nice. It's exciting to play the bigger teams and see how you compare. I think we'll be competitive in some sports and not so in others. But time will tell. Already our football schedule is about 100 times better than the last few years. Better in terms of opponent, maybe not better in terms of win/loss, but again the challenge is what is exciting.

I'm a little surprised that Juan Diego isn't going to play 4A football. With the talent they are able to bring in every year, and the fact that 3AA is smaller now than it was, I would have thought that their coaches would have lobbied pretty hard to play up to 4A.

MantiCoug, it makes sense, you were talking rivalry and geography, not just size, I can get behind that. And as Eagle Dad said, congrats on this past season!

Was this done out of numbers or sympathy? I look at Canyon View, and I dont think they have any problems numbers wise. They are right in the middlge of 3A. Why are we moving them with smaller schools? I know they are terrible at football, but we cant just move teams around because they are bad. We should only move them because they are low on numbers.
