I don't know all the facts but it appears that the citation against her is a cheap shot in order to cover up a lack of integrity in the department. She should be commended, not condemned.
But perhaps integrity is not one of those elusive Utah Values.
Re. One old man. Is integrity a value appreciated anywhere in this country anymore?
Since the program is part of a public university, the departments budget need to be made public and viewed to determine if the the ones who are really doing the work (teachers) are being compensated properly and who exactly is being paid to recruit these students. The department is going to have to secure full-time professors who are well educated and understand the nuances of teaching foreigners how to speak another language. This is a specialized field which should hold as much respect and compensation as those who are teaching in any other field at SUU. But, instead, they are being treated as "second class citizens" just like the students they teach. These good young men and women who travel halfway around the world to get an American education deserve much better than this!!
Bravo, Belinda!! SUU should be recruiting you to help improve the ESL program...not try to privately and publicly humiliate you for trying to do the right thing!! SHAME ON YOU SUU ADMINISTRATION!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR ACTIONS!! YOU DESERVE THIS!!
If the numbers are correct, the person(s) recruiting the Saudi students are actually earning more than the teachers who are educating those students. This is a cash cow for whomever is getting compensated to recruit. This is a disservice to the students who are coming to SUU expecting a first class education. I cannot believe that the Dean or Provost have nothing to to do (directly or indirectly) with the revenue being derived from the heavy recruiting of students from the Middle East.
Why was she looking through papers that were not her student's? She did not have the right to do that. Though the problem may be a real one, she should use legal means to bring it to light.
