I'd say to have a habit of being truthful, open and inclusive when doing family finances. It will really help them as they grow and need to manage their own finances, thus saving them some major, unneeded, heartache.

Children should be let be children without the burdens of adulthood. Help them understand that when you spend money, you are making a choice... between options... and teach them how to weigh options. But please, don't put the burdens of the word on their young shoulders. They have plenty of time for that.
