Fascinating article. He's a complex person. Glad to have him play for the Cougars.

BYU needs to do the honorable thing and put Jim McMahon in their hall of fame for outstanding humanitiarian service to the communities he has lived in. That service was/is worth far more than the credits he has left on his degree. Come on, BYU! Award McMahon an honorary doctorate of humor and humanity and let him in!

Good luck Jimbo. I really hope this does the trick. I also wish we had something for the many others who suffer from dementia as they get older. Its really a shame when people reach a time in their life when all they have are their memories and they start to lose that.

Put him in the BYU Hall of Fame and retire his jersey NOW!!! He certainly has earned it.

We need a petition that says "Because Jim McMahon or anyone else would be incapable of completing his college course work due to a debilitating mental condition that will be with him for the rest of his life, BYU should immediately induct Jim McMahon into the BYU Hall of Fame." After all, they would do so if he died. Time to induct.

I loved watching Young, Nielson, Shiede, Wilson, Bosco, Detmer, Sarkisian, Beck, and Hall play, but my all-time favorite BYU QB is Jim McMahon.

Hopefully, BYU and McMahon will be able to find a way to fill the one glaring omission from BYU's Sports Hall of Fame.

Jimbo has reported he is not interested in being in the Hall. So why should we be interested in getting him in? He has not exactly been a good representative of the school. Take away his accomplishments on the field, and what is remaining? Speaking of what he did as QB, in my opinion he was the best BYU ever had, if not the best college QB ever. I loved seeing him play. Best wishes on the medical procedures.

Because it's the BYU Sports HOF. It's not the BYU Student Athlete HOF, and you agree with me that Jim is the best QB in a long string of great BYU QB's. It seems silly to not put one of the best players in school history in the HOF over a couple of credits. Even though he wasn't the greatest Mormon, he is(I know from personal experience) a great person.

Jim McMahon wasn't a Mormon. Probably part of the reason he's not in the HOF already. He was a party animal and the best QB BYU's ever seen ... It's nice to see so much LDS support here to induct him without any judgment or bitterness.

Don't kid yourself; not being a Mormon has NOTHING to do with with Jim McMahon not being in the BYU HOF.

Jim McMahon is one the greatest players ever to play for BYU and he deserves to be in BYU's HOF, but his religion is irrelevant.

All these favorable comments to McMahon give me the tingles being from Chicago and all. It's nice to see this kind of unified support for someone who was non-LDS and well ... pretty much against most of what they believe in a lot of ways.

This thread has encouraged me to look up McMahon's BYU highlights on youtube later. Never seen his college days. Should be interesting! : )
