Massively open online classes 'about to change world'
Online courses have one significant flaw--they do a poor job in teaching
critical thinking. They are great for learning content, but the application,
discussion, and interaction of people and information cannot be duplicated in an
online course. Deep learning (learning for understanding) requires the
association with other people. The best assessments are project or essay based.
I have yet to see a computer program assess a person's skills and
understanding. They can only assess the regurgitation of factual information.
My prediction: Colleges and universities will use MOOC's to
deliver content (much like a glorified college text), while classroom time is
devoted to the discussion, peer review, and application of content knowledge.
