I think Brian Johnson has potential, but for the time being, he is in way over his head. Play calling has been brutal (2 QB draws in the redzone against OSU after driving the field with White & York). Easy to make excuses about injuries etc, but all programs deal with injuries. Brian needed more experience before getting the OC job in the PAC 12.
As opposed to what? Going in reverse? Brian is beloved and most Utah fans feel Brian should remain in the program and do his time. I don't blame Brian as much as I blame Whit. Whit had every opportunity to hire a good OC. He waited, waited and then surprised us with a beloved Ute with no experience. Gaining experience on everyone else's dime.
How tough could it be? Hand the ball to White. Repeat.
I don't blame the losses on Brian he can't control guys dropping balls or making other mistakes. I agree that some of the play calling has been suspect - like running Wilson down at the goal line two times in a row.
They win as a team and lose as a team and the Utes need to get better in many areas other than just the play calling. I hope they can put it all together this week against Cal. Everyone needs to step up make plays and cut out the bad penalties.
Go Utes!
Utes would be better off in the Big Sky Conference.
Johnson's play calling has been better the last couple of games, but no matter what he and Whitt call, the players have to execute. They have to make plays and they haven't.
Put it all together and win tomorrow.
