Sounds like a depressed man who has a lot of things to think about and decisions to make and he will resurface on his own time and his own will. Walk-abouts are common forms of time alone to think and plan the future and sometimes it can take days or weeks to get your mind straight. When you are on a walkabout phones, money, ID, are the last thing you think about. The guy is smart and has a lot of character and there's no reason to doubt or trust in him, a trait many men/women would envy as a bucket list wish.
The girl friend and police may have left out some information but I don't think there is cause for alarm. There's more than enough empty buildings and industry plants and kind people to aid his refuge here and across america, its our american culture and heritage.
