Since when is payout the overwhelming determinant of "better bowl"?

And who's to say the #4 ACC team is better than the #2 MWC?

Your "facts" don't prove ANYTHING!

"being bowl eligible in the PAC 12 still results in a good bowl game. I will take that."

You want fries with that? Seems my earlier post was considered 'too disruptive'

I'm assuming the New Mexico Bowl, Kraft Fight Hunger, and Las Vegas Bowls are also 'good bowl games'? Hope so.

Nice to see these bowls have now been elevated to 'good bowl games' status since the Utes are now in PAC 12 where these are standard fare for the lower tier bowl qualifiers.

Funny how these bowls were not 'good bowl games' for BYU... go figure.

I'm rooting for you guys to barely make it. Several of us can have fun with that.

Posting with an opinion, and no facts to back it up again. Let's review, shall we?

Poinsettia Bowl (In San Diego most beautiful city and beautiful weather in the country) vs who cares?

Sun Bowl (in el paso, texas, unquestionably the dirtiest and least desirable city in America noted for murders, drugs, and the Mexican mafia.

BYU (5 million dollar surplus per year has no need of the added $)

utah (lowest budget in the pac12, doesn't even get a full payout from the pac12, runs a deficit, has to use student fees to pay its bills, miniscule "fan"base)

Class is in session again.

@sammyg

I'm really not sure which would be funnier, utah in the new mexico bowl or utah in no bowl. Either would be funny though so it is probably win/win this year.

LOL!

@Jealous U

Actually if you go back and look at the last decade or so the #2 Mountain West team was superior to the #4 acc team just about every single year.

So much for spokane utes "facts" and attempts at educating the rest of us to his crimson clouded view of the college football world.

LOL!

Duck Hunter thinks the bowl that pay out less, is better. Too Funny. LOL Next thing you know, he try and explain/spin how the Poinsettia bowl is better than the Sugar Bowl. LOL
$5 million in surpluss? Pretty pale compared to Utah's $21 million per year, TV Contract.
Try, try again Duckie! LOL!

As usual for our little friends on the hill, MONEY seems to be the ONLY consideration.

Utah won't be getting anywhere close to $21 million for another two years, and when the Utes finally granted big boy status in the conference, all of that money will be used to upgrade Utah's facilities, which already lag behind the facilities of BYU and every team in the PAC 12.

While Utah is upgrading their trailers, the other PAC 12 schools are busy upgrading facilities that were already superior to Utah's. Face it, the Utes will never have the resources to match the other schools in the PAC 12 or BYU.

As Duckhunter already pointed out, the Utes are still gouging their students and season ticket holders just to make ends meet.

If you really want to compare "paleness", check out the empty spaces in Utah's trophy case reserved for National Championship and Heisman trophies, then travel on down to Provo and see for yourself what those iconic trophies look like in person.

btw, how much does the Rice Bowl pay? Your September 15th game may be the closest U get to a bowl this year.

@spokane ute

Only a utah "fan" like yourself would try to claim a 5 million dollar surplus is inferior to 21 million dollars that doesn't yet exist. More evidence of the type of math taught on the hill?

LOL!

The payout of a bowl has nothing to do with the desirability of attending it for fans. You can continue to go to el paso every year if you so desire. I'll be happy to go to San Diego, San Francisco, Dallas, and other pleasant destinations.

The bigger, more desirable, more prestigious (read better) bowls have higher payouts. That is an indisputable fact.

I see the BYU fans have keyed in on El Paso. What the Sun Bowl lacks in location, it makes up for in tradition and quality games. That is what cfb is all about, right?

Point and case: BYU's bowl was played in Dallas and drew an attendance of 30,258. Utah's bowl, in El Paso, drew 48,123. Neither game was completely sold out so stadium size isn't the reason for the difference. Maybe someone can explain why BYU, with their better destination and nationwide fan-base couldn't fill a 32,000 seat stadium?

@ Ducky

Get used to San Diego, because that's the only place BYU will ever go for a bowl. As far as math goes, let me make it as simple as I can: $21 > $5. How about some more match?
Utah 17 - BYU 16
Utah 54 - BYU 10
Utah 24 - BYU 21
Pretty interesting numbers eh? Your inferiority complex grows with each passing week. I also like how you troll the Utah threads and take shot after shot at the program you so envy. Very Classy indeed.

@ Jealous you

For Starters, I'm not you Little Friend.
Oviously, the better bowls pay higer amounts. That's a simple fact.
Also, you may want to do a little reseach prior to posting.
Utah will earn a 50% split next year ~$10 mill, a 75 % spilt the next year, ~$15 mill, and a full share there after $20 mill +.
Can't match other PAC 12 facilities? Really? Ever been to Pulman or Boulder? Apparently not.
Trophy Case? Hmmm, we have two BCS bowl victories over the last 10 years. During that time span Utah has won 8 bowls including the Fiesta, Sugar, Sun, Armed Forces, Emerald, Poinsettia, and Liberty. BYU Heisman? the last time that happened was over 20 years ago. National Championship? Oh, the won from almost 30 years ago? The one where you beat a 6-6 Michigan team, and didn't beat a single ranked team? The only NC that can say that; how embarassing. I love how BYU fans jump in there time machine. 3 in a row, and 8 of the last 11. Score Board!

LOL!

"The bigger, more desirable, more prestigious (read better) bowls have higher payouts. That is an indisputable fact.

There is no "prestige" in going to the sun bowl. Absolutely no one, and I mean no one, outside of utah "fans" and those of us mocking them for thinking it is something great, cares about it, remembers what happened in it, or will ever in their entire lives give it another thought. No one.

Of ocurse no one will remember BYU's bowl game last year outside of the fans either. Once utah "fans" like yourself understand that fact then you'll quit bragging about going to an armpit of a city and beating a mediocre team in a bowl no one but the "fans" of the teams that played in it cares about. No one cares.

As far as attendence it is simple. The game in Dallas was played on Friday morning, most people are at work. The bowl in el paso was played on Saturday at noon, most people aren't at work. Switch them around and you get the opposite result.

@spokane ute

No matter how hard utah "fans" try to spin it, winning a National Championship and a Heisman Trophy so far surpasses anything any team or player at utah has ever done that there is no comparison. National Championships and Heisman Trophies are enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. 4th place rankings are not. Just the facts.

LOL!

No matter how hard Utah "Haters" spin it, they have to get in their time machine to debate programs. Score Board Guy, Score Board!

Do you realize that Utah currently has 22 players in the NFL, compared to 7 by BYU?

There's your cue: quick, to the time machine!

blah blah blah byu who cares. For you Utah fans, something worth seeing :) Go to youtube and type in Requiem of U - A Tribute to Utah Ute Football. Pretty cool. We can still have a good season guys. Let the bandwagon fans go away! We can still do this, THIS is what college football is about, sticking with your team.

Duckhunter,

The most important thing about bowl games - when you are invited, go win the game! Both Utah and BYU were successful at that last year - congratulations to both teams!

There is only a handful of truly meaningful bowls, and the rest are a reward for an above average to very good season.

Biased fans like us, who spend way too much time reading/posting comments in the Deseret News, predictably favor our team's bowl over our rival's. But typically, the higher payout matches what the national fanbase and media think of how "prestigious" a bowl game is. While upper-tier programs don't aspire to the Sun Bowl, claiming that the Armed Forces Bowl is the more desirable game is a stretch.

If the Armed Forces Bowl is all that, then why was it played on a Friday morning, "when most people are at work?" It's because the game can't attract the viewership to justify televising it in a weekend or evening time slot.

Last year's Sun Bowl was the 13th most watched bowl game. It had almost twice as many viewers as the Armed Forces Bowl, which had the 33rd most viewers.

Funny that people are already talking about bowl games. You all realize the season isn't even half way over right? Slow down there, turbo!

Two For Flinching

@ Duckhunter

I never said the Sun Bowl was the most prestigious bowl in the land or even that anybody outside of Utah or Atlanta will remember it.

However, you're continued attempts to discredit the Sun Bowl are laughable. You even made my point for me. Utah's bowl game was played on Saturday at noon, when many people are able to watch and attend. This is because people want to watch and attend.

BYU's bowl game was played at noon on Friday because it is a crappy bowl with very little demand.

In short, the Sun Bowl is FAR more prestigious than the Armed Forces Bowl. Just as the BCS bowls are far more prestigious than the Sun Bowl.

Lastly, I have not bragged about anything in this thread. I simply disputed some of the statements put forth by a few of the Cougar fans.

Certain individuals will debate you if you say that grass is green. I totally agree with your take on bowls. With a few exceptions the best bowls are played later in the season, and pay more money; every college football fan knows that; regardless of what program you pull for. Take Care Guys.
