There is an enormous part of the population that could be called the
"working poor". I have a good friend who works about 7 hours a day, 6 or
7 days a week, as a grocery store checker. She can barely pay her rent and
utilities. She recently found out she needs to have eye surgery to save her eye
sight, and it will cost her about $3,000. She has no insurance, no savings, and
no possible way that she can imagine coming up with that amount of money. Since
she is divorced and lives alone, her children are grown, she barely makes too
much to qualify for Medicaid, and that might not pay for the surgery anyway.
There are many people who are stuck between a rock and a hard place...not enough
money to take care of necessities, but too much money to get any assistance.
