Janet,

Perhaps you are misunderstanding what is being implied when one refers to "drinking the Kool-aid. The reference suggests that some people are making very poor decisions in following a leader or philosophy out of blind obedience, perhaps because the leader is charismatic, without really thinking for oneself and thinking of the long term consequences. This is a real situation that exists on both sides of the political arena, and to suggest that we ignore that possibility is naive at best. Was Jonestown tragic? Yes. Does that mean we cannot reference it? I cannot think why.

The reference does not suggest that there cannot be different viewpoints.

"(President Obama)somehow went to an Ivy League college with no apparent income"

Yes. President Obama went to Harvard Law School and took out student loans, which he paid off as of 2004.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, went to a private prep school, which costs upwards of 40K/year and then sold stock his father gave him to pay his living expenses while at BYU and Harvard (the same Ivy League school Barack Obama attended).

Their experiences are so close it's almost spooky.

I am proud of you standing up for what you believe. A multi-millionaire paid off his student loans in 2004, that was because he was running for Senator and did a little better than Tim Geithner on paying the government.

He only paid his student loan then due to his new found public view he liked. It was President Bush's time to be bashed by the Illinois duo and Obama was trying to set up for his run for the President and clean up his multi-millionaire image. He doesn't publicize this but he didn't pay his debts until he was in the public view other than the normal operations of Illinois and especially Chicago.

Stand up for your values, kathyn and keep up the good work to add style to this forum.

If any person really wants to know how "Mormonism" shaped Mitts life there is a perfect opportunity to listen to the ecclesiastical leadership of his church this weekend (Oct 6-7). It's called General Conference and members from all over the world gather to listen. I and my family will watch it on television or the internet while others may do the same or watch from meetinghouses throughout the world.

If you decie to watch you will hear sermons on faith, love, devotion, service, family, and charity among other teachings.

General Conference is a great venue to discover what Mormons are taught and the doctrine that shapes their lives. This informatino is extremely accessible this weekend. If you really are undecided about your vote this coming November and are looking for more information on one of the candidates--this is a great information-gathering opportunity.

Obama is playing golf while he can.

If all Mitt wanted to do was golf then that is what he would be doing.

Obama has squandered his time in the White House.

Time for him to go.

The less Mitt Romney says about the Mormon view of American history, the better. His views are ambiguous enough as is.

The debates will do nothing to sway votes in favor of Romney.

The GOP has nominated a man who has governed as a big-government liberal in one of the most liberal (if not the most liberal) states in the union: Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.

Furthermore, on virtually every issue one can think of, Governor Romney has flip-flopped more often than a fish that just landed in the bottom of a boat. The biggest flip-flop is his nomination by the GOP when it has been radically transformed by far-right Tea Party ideology! A liberal representing radical Conservatives? How did that happen?

To get a feel for just how often Romney changes his positions, Just do a little research.

If Mitt Romney has proven anything, it is that his word means absolutely nothing. Nothing! Romney is an opportunistic chameleon who will say anything or do anything to get elected. Yet, this is the man whom conservatives trumpet as the savior of America!

Why?

@JWB

The point is President Obama needed student loans to attend Harvard. His Adjusted Gross Income, according to his published tax records for 2004 was $207,647. Of that, President Obama paid $40,426 in taxes. By no means was President Obama destitute in 2004, but it took him time to pay off student loans for Harvard University, whose current tuition, as listed on their Law School's FAQ page, is $49,950 (with an added estimate of $25K for living expenses.)

If you pro-rate those numbers in reverse, Harvard was still quite expensive for both candidates, but was much more of a financial burden upon President Obama than it was on Mitt Romney.

All that to remind you of my original point, that the experiences of these two men were not, as Kathyn implied, similar.

Lee Femedlers - Thank you for adding a soft spoken and useful recommnedation. Until reading your comment I was totally dismayed by the tone (and the lack of truth) in the comments made so far. Mr. Walker has tried to present a summary of an article that simply tries to find answers to some of the questions people have been asking about Mormonism and how it might influence Mitt Romney. If only we could all emulate the things that will be said during General Conference this weekend, the world would be a better place. But just because we can't be perfect in following Jesus' example, doesn't mean we shouldn't all try.

Thanks for adding a positive remark.

On every salient issue, there is no differences between Romney and Obama.

BOTH support/ed:

- TARP;
- the economic stimulus package;
- assault weapons bans and other gun control measures;
- the bailout of the auto industry;
- being big spenders;
- the Federal Reserve (both oppose a full audit of the Fed);
- universal health care;
- are on record as saying the TSA is doing a "great job";
- the NDAA (including indefinite detention of American citizens without due process);
- the renewal of the Patriot Act;
- the "free trade" agenda of the global elite;
- soft on illegal immigration;
- have a history of appointing liberal judges;

- Neither supports immediately balancing the federal budget;
- Both are showered with campaign contributions from Wall Street;
- Neither wants to eliminate the IRS or the direct income tax;
- Both believe the President has the authority to take the nation to war without the approval of Congress;
- Neither has any qualms about running up more public debt to the already gargantuan debt of 16 trillion dollars.

Tell me again why Romney is better than Obama!?

Say No to BO - "Oooh, let's explore the childhood of Obama and how that might color his style of governance. Time magazine would never touch that."

They did, four years ago, and then 8 years ago when he gave the speech at the Democratic convention of 2004. Just wanted to point that out as it seems you missed those issues.

Pavalova - what in the world are you talking about - 2 million to keep transcripts sealed..... oh, and by the way, where are Mitts transcripts.... I am sure they are out there for all to see, right? Oh.... its different. Gotcha.

I think Mitt has a very compelling background. I really do. His father rose up from those 47 percenters himself... when he and his wife needed assistance for two years. Mitt's mom talks about it in an interview she gave. The real Mitt would have been very compelling.

On the other hand, this contrived version to appease the Tea Party just comes off stiff. Makes the Tea Partiers happy, but just doesn't feel real.

What I don't like though is his leading agenda, no capital gains taxes, would take Mitt's tax rate to 0%.

Barack Obama is a confidence man and therefore sounds good and is likable. When was a confidence man not likable or a film-flam man for that matter? He talked a good line and a lot of people bought it and there was the attraction of electing the first African American president and the thrill that went with it. The reality is that he took a sizable number of people prisoner to his rhetoric in 2008. He has had an agenda of destroying this country from within and all the time telling us bedtime stories. The proper term for those who still support him would be victims of Stockholm Syndrome. Compare Obama to himself. Read the articles by Thomas Sowell titled: Obama Versus Obama, Obama Versus Obama Part II, Obama Versus Obama Part III and Obama Versus Obama Part IV. He has talked a lot and promised a lot but his actions are completely different than his stories.
We cannot afford four more years of his destruction. The person best qualified to lead the country is Mitt Romney. We have a scenario very much like it was in 1980 only Obama is much worse than Carter.

What did Time say that was so earth shaking?

I think one of the fun things that is pointed out that if Mitt became president, he would be in a ward in DC that is largely more liberal than conservative.... and that when it comes to religion, he would still be accepted as just another brother in the church. This is all goodness.... the gospel spans political boundaries, like it or not.

The problem I have is so many like to pretend that the church is reflected or represented by its Utah membership. But the fact is that at best, Utah now only represents less than 18% of the total church membership. With this will come a much broader life experience mix into the church. The church will be a constant, but where people came from will be ever more diverse. The church will no longer be represented by a state that is over 85% white.

That is the beauty of this event. Win or Loose, Romney will hopefully show that there is a great diversity in the church. We are all centered around the gospel, but in our personal lives we come from very different places. Good for Time.

Dad of Sons.... Obama went to a private school in hawaii on a needs based scholarship. His grandparents that raised him were not wealthy... perhaps middle class, but wealthy, no.

I know this is what makes people think I am a liberal.... but I am not. I am just anti false information. The spread of false information like this is the most corrupting thing in our politics. Vote on things that are real, not contrived. There is enough real stuff about both of these guys, we don't need to be making stuff up.

And no, just because someone forwarded you an email, or you read it in a blog online, or it came from some shock radio jock doesn't make it true.

This applies to both sides. Obama grew up rich like Romney.... good grief. I also assume Romney grew up black like Obama too....

Everywhere one looks, mention of the "secret Romney tape" abounds. Yet the newly-found 1998 Obama tape of him speaking at Loyola University in Chicago and actually outlining his political vision (admitting that welfare recipients potentially are a majority coalition) can only be linked to on Rush Limbaugh's home page. It is being COMPLETELY ignored by media.

Oh, but Time Magazine is going to take a look at Mitt's childhood and then interpret for us what Mitt 'really' thinks and, therefore, how he will govern.

Folks, if our day isn't a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!", then nothing is.

To middle class: Having money does not necessarily make life easy. I'm sure Mitt would have gladly given up his wealth if his family had been spared the other challenges they have faced, such as his wife's cancer and multiple sclerosis as well as several miscarriages. Raising five sons, being a member of a misunderstood and often persecuted religion, and being a Republican governor in a heavily Democratic state certainly were challenges.

Red Headed Stranger -

">Criticized all his life for being black.
Really? What about Mitt being criticized all his life for being Mormon? It is still acceptable to make jokes about Mormons. You can't even make a legitimate complaint about the deficit without being labeled a hate monger racist. "

Honestly I love these comments. As you walk down the street, how many people judge you on your Mormon-ness? Honestly. How many people didn't even know Mitt was a Mormon before he ran for office. I can be relatively assured more people have judged Obama based on his skin color than have judged Mitt on his religion. In a board meeting, Mitt's religion surely was not evident in his discussions, unless Mitt choose to make it an issue. On the other hand, a black, hispanic, asian pretty much has no options here... probably the thing that makes them who they are the least is the first thing they are judged and categorized on.

Not understanding that simple point makes one wonder how naive some people are about race issues that still remain. It far better now, but it isn't a non-issue.

re:Kathyn
What are your sources?

#1 Obama did attend a private school in Hawaii courtesy of a scholarship from 5th grade on.

#2 Obama's grandparents were not "avowed" communists. During the 60's Franklin Davis was suspected by right-wingers of being a communist without proof. Obama stated in his book he aspired attributes of MLK, Mandela, Malcolm, DuBois but that Franklin Davis and others "fell short."

#3 Never worked for ACORN.

#4 As a Illinois State Senator he sometimes supported Republican bills. His "present" votes (used and permitted by Illinois legislators) were a little over a hundred out of thousands of votes he cast.

#5 Obama was teased and bullied while in Indonesia. Race? Don't know. Do you have the quote where Obama says race was never an issue for him? Source?

re:pavlova
"Anyone who is willing to pay $2 million to keep his college transcripts "sealed"

Blatantly false
Nobody has to pay money to keep college transcripts "sealed." I can't see my children's transcripts even though I pay their college tuition.

I would suggest you at least visit factcheck or snopes so you don't embarrass your yourselves.
