Dear Ms. Love, I qualify for WIC and pay $7,000/yr in out of pocket medical costs (deductible, co-pay, not covered) for a physically disabled child. I pay taxes and then get a full refund. (Net $0, hence I pay no payroll taxes). Please don't take that benefit away. if you insist, I must remain with Rep. Matheson.

I watched this debate on Channel 2.

Love appeared shrill, whiny, smug, and even vindictive at times, spouting off all the conservative catch phrases that really don't mean anything. I appreciate someone who wants to cut spending, but she needs to give us some concrete plans, not a "starting point for a conversation" as she puts it. Furthermore, I don't trust conservatives who tout "less spending" to the working and middle class while their cronies in big business rake in the bucks with tax breaks galore (see Big Oil).

Matheson, on the other hand, appeared calm, reasonable, and logical. After this debate, my mind is made up to vote for Matheson. I'm not a huge fan of Matheson, but I certainly don't want Love representing out state with her self-righteous anger.

I don't know what she is thinking. I pay taxes. I work hard and I qualify for the earned income credit. I support 2 disabled children the best way I can and she wants to penalize me saying that I don't pay enough to the country. I am not in District 4 but I do go to the Republican side, but I don't understand this. In the words of Vinny Barbirino from Welcome Back, Kotter, "I'm so CONFUSED"

Wasilla? Saratoga Springs? Whatever. Neither is ready for prime-time.

The story of Mia Love's family is as much an American story as that of Barack Obama. One question remains to fill out her biography to give a little more background as to how she developed her value system of self-reliance and and conservative virtue.

When her parents reached these shores with only $10 dollars in their pockets, how did they live the first week while her father was out looking for a job? $10 doesn't go very far. Even buying only rice and beans, they would only have enough for a couple of days (unless he got an advance on his salary assuming he had a job waiting as soon as they got off the boat) with nothing left over for a place to stay.

I'm assuming that they got no help from anyone else and did not take anything from available government resources for legal immigrants. It was the mid-70s and people were coming to America from Haiti to escape poverty, but I'm confused how someone so very poor (remember they only had $10) raised themselves up by themselves when they had absolutely nothing and may not have even spoken English.

Ms. Love is wrong in her condemnation of the EITC. It keeps the children of tax-paying Americans from the life-crippling effects of deep poverty. Unless those children are nourished, educated, and healthy, our grandchildren will bear the cost of their support long after we're gone.

"The United States federal earned income tax credit or earned income credit (EITC or EIC) is a refundable tax credit for low- and medium-income individuals and couples, primarily for those who have qualifying children. When the credit exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who qualify and claim the credit. That is, this credit is refundable. This tax credit is provided, in part, to offset the burden of social security taxes and to maintain an incentive to work"

I think Mia Love did really great at clarifying her record as Mayor. Saratoga Springs continues to be not only a sprawling city, but boasts of a budget surplus and has rolled back taxes. I'm sorry to see Matheson engaging in negative campaigning and engaging in scare tactics like the Obama Campaign.

A friend who makes $40K anually has 2 little kids and works really hard at Primary Children and other organizations as an interpreter really counts on those tax returns every year to buy what he cannot afford with his salary. He and his wife literally live paycheck by paycheck. Mia Love really needs to remember her roots and think that at one point in her parent's life they had to get some help from government programs (WIC or public clinics, etc.) She is a good person with ideals, but my vote will go to Matheson who seems more aware of what's really going on. I like someone who knows what is saying, and not only someone who learns her lines and repeats the same slogan all the time.

I would be curious to ask Congressman Matheson why he supports President Obama's 923 Executive Orders which is more than 6 times as many as all other Presidents combined? Real issues. For example how can Congressman Matheson support these Executive orders which are written to take away our freedom at the Presidents choosing. Not democratic but more Soviet style! judge for yourself! Fox example:

10995 Allows the Government to take over ALL communication media?
10997 Allows the Government to take over ALLelectrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels and minerals?
10998 Allows the Government to take over all food resources and farms?
11000 Allows the Government to mobilize civilian work brigades under government supervision?
11003 Allows the government to take over all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft?
11004 Allows the Government Housing and Finance Authority to Relocate

Additional Obama Executive Orders:

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11004 allows the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate
communities, build new housing with public funds, designate areas to be
abandoned, and establish new locations for populations.

-EXECUTIVE ORDER 11005 allows the government to take over railroads, inland
waterways and public storage facilities.

-EXECUTIVE ORDER 11049 assigns emergency preparedness function to federal
departments and agencies, consolidating 21 operative Executive Orders issued
over a fifteen year period.

-EXECUTIVE ORDER 11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency
Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in
times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

-EXECUTIVE ORDER 11310 grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce
the plans set out in Executive Orders, to institute industrial support, to
establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate
penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.

-EXECUTIVE ORDER 11921 allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to
develop plans to establish control over the mechanisms of production and
distribution, of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit and the flow of money
in U.S. financial institution in any undefined national emergency.

Why do we need these?

don 17,

Please check your facts, the president has issued 136 executive orders, as of August 2012. Pres Bush issued 291 (in his 8 years in office). None of those orders write above were issued by Pres. Obama. Please stop posting your chain e-mails on this fourm and presenting them as fact.

..... It's like you can't take 30 seconds to google one of them to see if it's actually true.

To Dn17

You need to do better checking on the information you receive. President Obama has issued a total of 139 executive orders. The viral email that claims Obama has signed 900 executive orders lists 13 orders as evidence, all of which previous presidents signed in the 1960s and 1970s. Presidents number their executive orders consecutively. The first executive order that President Obama signed was EO-13489, which dealt with presidential records. Obama’s predecessors signed any executive order with a number lower than 13489. The first executive order the email lists and attributes to Obama is 10990, which John F. Kennedy signed in 1962. Gerald Ford signed the last executive order listed, 11921, which updated how various federal departments and agencies prepare and respond to national emergencies.

Your comments about these executive orders, especially attributing them to President Obama, is without truth or merit. Please -- do your homework before posting nonsense like that.

When I got that email Don, I looked it up, so I wouldn't look the fool, even forwarding it.

Do the taxes paid during the year earn interest until they are refunded?
If so, people who use EIC are contributing as they do not earn that interest.

Representative Jim Matheson has represented Utah with a little different flavor than the other 2 Representatives that make Utah appear to be on a different key, which we are. Matheson has been exposed to years of political dealings in the State and Nationally, with both good and bad results. He is level headed but is a Democrat, which nationally presents a problem for Utah and it's way of life.

Representative Chaffetz is not a level-headed person, all the time. He has not been afraid to bring up good issues that help Utah. However, he has brought up issues that should not be on anyone's plate during this type of economic situation. We can't afford that type of exposure now and in the future, either. He has been there long enough to know that we need statesman type of Representatives and not just press grabbers.

Mia Love would take a different perspective to Congress and I believe she would learn to do the right things for the right reason. I am not in that District but hopefully she would not need to be like Michelle Bachman, who has campaigned for President with a lot of fervor.

May I remind all of those who make comments against Mia Love and had such glowing reviews of Jim Matheson, he will not be representing the fourth district. He will be representing the Democratic party, will caucus with them, will support Nancy Pelosi, and ultimately support Barack Obama. He will not support a balanced budget, he will not support the Ryan or any other plan to avert a fiscal cliff, he will not support a strong military or a foreign policy based on strength, and ultimately will not support Mitt Romney who the vast majority of the fourth district will be voting for. Regardless of her experience, Mia Love will support Mitt Romney and legislation that supports a conservative agenda. Jim Matheson, no matter what, will not support what the vast majority of what you believe and think you will be voting for.

Mia Love understands and supports personal responsibility and voluntary charitable activities. Matheson and the "takers" insist that they have a right to take money from people to give to others. While recipients may be in dire straits, deserving of help or extremely grateful, they are not ENTITLED to support from others.

The "earned income tax credit" may have been praised by Reagan, but would he support it today surrounded by myriad other transfer of earnings schemes which have been heaped on top of it in the last 30 years?

Mia Love has principles and does not shy away from standing up for what is right, even when it is unpopular with some people. Matheson is a pander-bear politician who is happy to spend your money to win reelection.

Vote for Mia Love if you want to save our country from bankruptcy.

coleman51,

Why does his party affiliation mean that he won't support any of that. He has already stated he supports a Balanced Budget, he supports a strong military (lots of contractors could lose funding for projects that are obsolete and aren't needed that the Republican's want to keep).

We can say conversely that Mia won't represent the 4th district either. She will support the rich (aren't many in the 4th district) over the poor (lots there). Her statements already support this supposition. She also would support the default on the debt if there was a tax increase included. She would ruin the economy to avoid a tax increase.

Before, a conservative agenda meant that they would work to balance the budget with both increases and cuts, they would work to limit the scope of government and empower individuals not companies.

Current Republican's are only CINO (Conservatives In Name Only). They don't support actually balancing the budget (Increases are needed). 2001 was the last revenue positive year, what happened after? Tax cuts and Medicare Part D. (If Republicans cared about spending, why aren't they trying to remove Medicare Part D with Obamacare?)

Love was clearly in over her head last night. She never actually answered a question, just repeated GOP mantra and one liners, attacked Matheson/Obama, and never really provided any solutions. She's definitely not very polished or a very good debater.

Matheson on the other hand, was quite the opposite.

It's clear that he's the best option here. It's not even close. Mia Love=Sarah Palin

Those of you who support Jim Matheson, are you voting for Mitt Romney? If not, then don't vote for Mia Love. If you are voting for Mitt Romney, why would you handicap him by voting for Jim Matheson? Regardless of how Matheson votes on a few issues affecting Utah (although his record is dubious on that as well) he will vote on the large issues that affect our nation with the Democrats. The voters of the fourth district need to wake up to the reality that Utah is not the center of the universe and that we need Mia Love to support the Romney agenda to get our nation fiscally sound and safe from our enemies. We also need someone who will support a foreign policy that recognizes Israel as our closest ally in the Middle East, something the Obama administration refuses to do. We also need Mitt Romney to appoint judges, particularly on the Supreme Court, that judge on the principles in the Constitution. Mia Love will support Mitt Romney. Jim Matheson will not as he has well shown in the past.
