Congrats to Bronco for extricating himself from his stoic straightjacket, showing some emotion and for pulling the trigger like in the gunslinging days of BYU past. Yes, BYU lost a close one to a good team on their home field. No NC. Boo hoo! Poinsettia Bowl here we come.

Now, let's have some fun. Let's air it out. Let's take some more chances. More trick plays. If we win, great. If we lose, so what? Let's just watch some exciting football and support the coach and his team. We're independent. We're underdogs. Let's see if we can upset ND, USU, GT and beat who we are supposed to beat and show some class doing it.

Why is that when 2 SEC teams have a great defensive performance and it ends up in a 7-6 game everyone raves how great of a game it was. But when the same thing happens with 2 mid majors its a boaring game, these teams are horrible. ESPN is all over criticizing both teams and coaches. Yes it's not a great excitng game if your into offense. personaly I would rather watch a 43-42 type of game but you cant criticize these 2 teams for effort. Both Defenses played thier hearts out last night. It really is a shame that either team had to lose. However im glad my favorite team beat my second favorite team.

You obviously haven't been around very long if that's your only observation. BYU fans have never said Nelson was a great QB; the only thing they've said is he's a great competitor.

Hill was 3rd string until this game and most of the plays he'd practiced were situational, so he probably doesn't have a ton of passing plays to go to. That obviously needs to change, and quickly!

Didn't Bronco state earlier in the year that Lark was the backup to Nelson? When was he lying, then or now?

    Neither.

Coaches, like everyone else, often have to change plans when things don't go as expected.

Bronco announced before the game that Taysom was going to be the backup for this game.

That may well have been THE worst QB performance in BYU history.

While I admire Riley's grit and determination, he's proven absolutely in the last two games that he can't perform at the level needed. I feel bad for Nelson and Lark, but it's time to start preparing Taysom for next season's very difficult schedule.

What an absolutely wretched game to watch. The defenses on both sides were amazing, and both offenses looked utterly inept. It was like watching two high school offenses play against two NFL defenses. I've noticed a trend with BYU fans and their quarterbacks. A BYU QB is thrown into the heat and does reasonably well, wins a few games, and all of a sudden, he is superman. The savior of BYU football, the one that will win the Heisman and take BYU back to a national championship game. Then, the QB struggles against a good team and is replaced by another QB who performs only marginally better than his teammate. All of a sudden everybody turns their back on the original QB and proclaims his replacement the new savior of BYU football. It happened with Heaps, it's happening right now with Riley.

Have BYU fans considered that maybe the pressure from their unrealistic expectations from their quarterbacks may contribute to these quarterbacks' struggles on the field? Not every guy who throws the ball is going to look like Cam Newton right off the bat. It may even take a few seasons for him to get to that point.

BSU just proves that even with one of the biggest rebuilding years and one of the worst offenseses in school in history. They still beat a BYU team that was suppose to be BCS bound. That had the greatest QB since Steve Young. Kind of funny how quick all of you turn on your team and your QB. If BYU was going to win any games against BSU this was going to be the year. Petterson will bring alot stronger team next year to Provo.

After watching Bronco's decision making it is no wonder the BYU job was offered to Whittingham before it was finally accepted by Bronco. Kudos to the BYU defense. They were great. I am afraid that after the way Bronco threw the game away that the BYU defenders may just give up.

    Brave Sir Robin, Excellent points

Before week #1 BYU fans were mocking Utah's QBs. When I posted that BYUs QBs were no better than Utah's I was showered with hate by the usual suspects. Duckhunter even wrote a 6,000 word essay outlining BYU's superiority (must have spent 3 days on his analysis). I haven't seen the QB ratings from last night yet but Riley's can't be higher than 20 and Hills was probably somewhere around 60.

I'm not a BYU hater, in fact I want to see BYU win out, but some of you Y fans need to realize before the season starts that you are not a contender for the NC every year and you don't have a Heisman hopeful on your roster. Come back to earth

    Riley/Hill reminds me of Riley/Heaps

Riley struggles and they throw Heaps in too soon. He does ok for a while but is too young and loses confidence. They they go right back to Riley.

They are going to do the same thing with Hill... just wait.

  • Brave Sir Robin San Diego, CA
    Sept. 21, 2012 8:59 a.m.

Why are all you Y fans so high on Hill? He was 4 for 10 (!!!) for like 30 yards. It just happened that all 4 (!!!) of his completions came on the same drive. From what I saw the kid can't hit the ocean from a boat, or has Bronco told him that it's OK if the pass bounces once before reaching the receiver?

Is there something in the Honor Code that requires Y fans to overhype their QB's? First it was "John Beck is going to win the Heisman", then Max Hall, then Jake Heaps, then Riley Nelson, now this Hill kid. It would be shocking to hear one of you proclaim, just once, that your QB is probably going to be average.

Cougs, I think you really need to consider the bigger problem and i do mean bigger,
    THE OFFENSIVE LINE!

Nelson was horrible but he got his head bashed in because of the line. Hill did bring in a new look that BSU did not respond quickly to, but it is not a long term fix.

There are at least 3 more losses on the horizon and a couple could be blow outs.

A freshman who doesn't even know the play book while the best QB on team senior James Lark sits on the bench. Mendenhall,Hall and Doman should be fired for incompetence.

What an embarrassing performance on national tv. I seen some pathetic offenses in my time but Riley Nelson at QB takes the cake. After 3 interceptions and a fumble, why did it take so long to yank him from the game? Why go for a two point conversion? Your defense is playing lights out and you have no time outs left due to inept clock management. Didn't BSU going for it (what were they - o for 5 on 4th down conversions?) all those times in BYU territory tell you Peterson has ZERO FAITH in his kicker?

After tonight's train wreck, you will see Coach Mendenhall's name in those Bleacher Report articles entitled "Coaches Who Are Officially on the Hot Seat".

I'm a BYU fan and I never bought into the Nelson hype. He hasn't beaten a single good team. I've been appalled any time this paper runs an article about him becoming legendary. He's an ok (at best) quarterback and a good leader but that can only get you best mediocre and slightly better than mediocre teams.

Both coaches did not earn their pay in that game. One kick by BS and the game is over and one by BYU and they win in overtime. Now, basically BYU season is over and they have wasted the best defense they have ever had and most will graduate.

I'm a Utah fan and Alum, but I cheer for BYU every game except against the U. A BYU win only helps Utah with strength of schedule. BYU's defense is the best I can remember at the Y, athletic, physical and good speed. Terrific wide receivers and solid running backs, but the O line is mediocre at best. Hill shows promise, but the risk reward ratio with Nelson is much too high. My family was yelling at the TV to kick the extra point, and trust your defense to get to overtime.

I thought Lark was #2 on the depth chart and has the best arm of the QBs. Can't figure out the offensive coaching. Good luck against the good teams left on the schedule.

I never comment on BYU articles, but since all my BYU fan friends convinced me to watch the game with them, thought I'd get on here and give some props to BYU's defense. Sucks when a defense can play flawlessly, give up zero points, and not come away with a W. Big time performance against a solid program though- on that side of the ball.

I've got to think BYU would've pulled out the win if it had gone to overtime. Keep your heads up- lots of positives to take away from that game.

    Dear Mr. Holmoe,
Lets see, Boise CANNOT kick a field goal, and they CANNOT move the ball against your defense, So after the first long, confidence building scoring drive, instead of forcing over time where it appears you would have the advantage, you go for two??! And then no onsides kick?? Are you kidding me??!! Congratulations BYU, once again you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! Is BYU tying to win football games or running for miss congeniality? Despite his imperfections I've liked Bronco, but this is the last straw. He should be fired immediately. Or if not fired he should wear a Santa Clause suit next game so the opposition appreciates the gift.

Boise State is way down. That was the second game already in the first three that they have not scored an offensive TD (no TD vs. Michigan State).

Although I am not a BYU fan, I really can't stand Boise State. The chance to win was there. BYU is like Utah, Hoffman doesn't get the ball deep like Devonte Christopher, Kenneth Scott, and Dres Anderson.

One thing BYU does have that Utah doesn't seem to have yet: a running game. 17 carries is not enough for Alisa. Doman needs to run, and then set up play action down field. Riley nelson couldn't do that, can Taysom Hill?

Bronco may well be the one of the best D-Coordinators in the NCAA; however, he seems to be struggling as a Head Coach - yet again... Hill is a bright spot at the moment, but that can change.

Advice to BYU Administration: retain Bronco as DC, release Doman and hire a "real" OC, and look elsewhere for a new HC (which won't be easy, considering BYU's hiring standards and practices) - otherwise, the Cougs seem destined for mediocrity for the foreseeable future...

  • gdog3finally West Jordan, Utah
    Sept. 20, 2012 11:04 p.m.

Man Cougar fans, your defense is the best I have seen at BYU. This BYU team reminds me a lot of a few Utah teams in recent years (solid defense and an offense struggling to find itself).

More similarities; Bronco's loyalty and commitment to Riley Nelson is comparable to Whittingham's loyalty to Wynn for years at Utah. The Utes offensive skill position athletes have had their capabilities get stymied and they have wasted away. At BYU they actually have some real good skill position athletes on both offense and defense. But Hoffman and Apo don't get the ball, and if they do it's not down field.

BYU could have won last week and this week. They went 0-2. That hurts. Utah could have won their last two games and they went 1-1 in those. I am glad Utah won the rivalry game but the USU game still bites for me. To lose on forced fumbles that USU got back, and calls they didn't go the Utes way, is like BYU fans complaints that they could have won if not for turnovers and calls.

    Bounce back time.

I love Bronco, but bad decision to go for 2. BSU has a bad kicker and an offense that had not moved the ball consistently all game. Defense should feel insulted! Riley is not great, but he should not take much blame. Doman should take the heat for this. How many times did he even try to go deep? Look at BSU defense, they were all over the 5-10 yard stuff all night. Hard for Riley to find an open man when all the defensive backs are 10 yards and closer to the line. Doman better get it together or he might be the next Jamie Hill in a week or two. The fire Brandon Doman websites are going to start to pop up soon!

Although this has been stated multiple times it cannot be repeated too often: The decision to go for 2 was utterly incomprehensible (and I am usually a rather fervent Bronco apologist). Does anyone reasonably think that we would not have prevailed in OT? Only one team scored an offensive touchdown and given the offensive struggles of both teams it likely would have come down to making mid-range field goals on the first possessions in OT -- favoring us. My regard for Bronco's overall situational football IQ has plummeted after this game.

Was there some sort of contest between the coaches to see who could make the most outrageous decisions? Go for it on 4th down when you have an easy field goal. Go for two points when the other team can run out clock. I can't believe this.

Odd decision to go for two. Nobody would be complaining had it worked. I thought they would rely on the defense in OT. Oh well. Bronco lost this one, not the players; and he needs to be held accountable. I admit in most situations, on the road, going for 2 is the right answer. But it shouldn't have even been a thought in this game. BSU had not scored a TD. BSU wouldn't let their kicker kick. Send it to OT.

Hill is a great runner, but BYU will never be great with a great runner. We have got to find the passing game. We have some of the best WR we've ever had. It makes no sense that our passing game sputters. I'm starting to buy-in to some of the concern about Doman.

I was just going to read all the excuses, bringing Utah into this conversation by a byu fan is typical byu. You just got beat once again, byu is not very good and Boise is not even close to the Utes. Both teams should be real proud of that showing in PRIME TIME, ESPN has got to be just counting the games until that contract is up. Might have been a good idea for the y to maybe win a game or two. IDAHO AT 10 O'clock doesent count. And the one thing that is so true these days is BYU CANNOT BEAT UTAH, and it looks the same for any team that has a winning record. BYU's defense is very good but great, I don't know. This is actually the second game Boise hasn't scored a TD. This isn't the Boise State offense of the past. They are very young on that side of the ball. Then I can't tell if BYU's offense is all that bad. Boise State and Utah's defenses are both very good. But the offense has to make strides. You can't go into ND and hold them to seven points, that is not going to happen. San Jose State can score points, Utah State can move the ball again and GT will move the ball and score too. BYU is staring at a 6-6 record, maybe 7-5 best case...

I know many people are excited about Hill, but he only completed one decent yardage pass and some seven yard curls when the DBs were playing ten yards off the receiver. I think everyone plays BYU on the line until BYU's QBs can throw deep and keep them honest.

Maybe BYU should go to an Air Force style offense since they have pretty much no passing game--at least that is tougher to overload against. I bet some of the BYU receivers want to transfer right about now. A little more patience with Heaps would have probably been best--Oh well! Good luck BYU! Join a conference fast!

It's easy to second guess after the 2-point try fails, but I have to agree it's hard to imagine why when the defense played so well throughout the whole game, and the offense finally shows something, that you would make it an all or nothing. It appears Bronco just let the situation get the better of him. He knows Boise State has lost like one home game in the last five years and got greedy. Just not a sound decision, and really an insult to the defense if you think about it.

Great defenses. In in 7-7 game, I figured BYU would have won with a field goal in OT. Alas, there was no OT.

Fact 1: This is a very good defense. Very Good.

Fact 2: Bronco is a Very Good Defensive Coordinator.

Fact 3: Hill is the future and the future should begin now.

Fact 4: Coaching cost this game. Offensive and Decisions. No two points in that circumstance and if you do, you go for the On Side. (See fact two as to where Bronco should be).

    Fact 5: Andy Reid.

Fact 6: Teams lose football games. That happens and it does not mean you are a bad team but giving it away is not how it should go.

Fact 7: Van Noy is an Olympian. As in Zeus or Apollo.

Fact 8: Good job Boise State - they are tough and nearly unbeatable at home. Proved again tonight.

Fact 9: This game has nothing to do with Utah.

Fact 10: I have my tickets on order for the Poinsettia Bowl and it will be against the Mountain West Champion - Boise State.

Not sure why everyone is complaining...Riley Nelson threw the game-winning TD.

I said in this paper that if Riley started against Boise State BYU would loose. They did...we did. The good news is that Riley was finally replaced in a game. Even though Bronco decided to take a loss, he did have the good judgement to finally give Hill the reigns. Let's hope this continues for the remainder of the season, but I fear we will see Riley starting in the next game.

I have to admit that was a great long drive at the end by the freshman Hill. You might actually have a QB.

What I don't understand is how do you go for 2 points when you have momentum and your defense has shut out Boise's offense? Tie the game and trust your defense win it.

Once again Bronco shows his coaching will cost BYU 3 or 4 loses a year. Gary Andersen should be smiling.

Right now Brandon Doman is making me miss Robert Anae and Gary Crowton. Why did it take 4 interceptions to pull Nelson? That loss belongs to Riley Nelson, Doman and Mendenhall. They all three owe the rest of the team as well as the fans an apology! Embarrassing to say the least!

OK, so not going for the kick was one stupid call, even before the play played out. But why no onsides kick? You are down 1, have no timeouts left and BSU needs basically just 1 first down to shut the game down. The offensive play calling in this game was the worst I've seen. No offense to Riley, but if your starting QB has 3 INTs and just 18 yards after 2 1/2 quarters, you don't keep him in. This is why you have a 2-deep chart!

Two weeks in a row that our offense gives away winnable games. This is sickening to watch what we anticipated would be a semi-potent offense sputter and fail. Pointsettia Bowl here we come!

The best defensive performance in BYU history for Bronco and he blows it on the 2 pt decision.

I love Bronco and I love the Cougars, but the coaches have a lot to explain going for the 2pt conversion. The other team cannot get into the end zone all night and the kicker cannot kick. Anything can happen but I like my chances in OT.
