The problem is that Romney conflates the folks who receive government assistance with the group that supports Obama. They are not the same. The vast majority of folks on assistance are actually found in southern Red states (and Idaho) that vote Republican, and are not located in the more liberal coastal states that voted for Obama. Romney did not tell the truth to his wealthy supporters in the video clip, but they bankrolled him anyway because they heard what they wanted to hear, regardless of the truth.

To "LDS Liberal" wow, you really suck into 100% false conspiracy thories. We should call you a "Taxer", if you believe that theory.

See the NY Times story "Tax Credits Shed Light on Romney". In there they state "American taxpayers who claim the foreign tax credit are required to report their total foreign taxes paid and tax credits used for the previous 10 years. So that return contains foreign tax data going back to 2000.

The good news for Mr. Romney is the forms suggest that he paid at least some federal income tax every year, as he has said he did."

The NY Times believes that Romney at least filed income taxes. If he didn't pay income taxes, did he do anything illegal? If he did nothing illegal, then he hasn't done anything wrong. If nothing wrong was done, who cares.

Really liberal how is Romney going to be any more a problem for the church than Harry Reid...

    1:40 p.m. Sept. 18, 2012

If indeed Harry Reid was right - and Romney paid no income taxes for the last 10 years, Bro. Reid was telling the truth, and Bro. Romney lied to the World.

He's made his being a Mormon, a Bishop and a Stake Preident central issue to his getting elected,
If he's now caught red-handed lying like that in the National Lime-light,
and using his Tithing and the Church as the reason for his disception -- My oh MY, that will not look good.

Liberals why do you not mention all the private fundraisers Obama continues to go back to in Hollywood? Again the liberals are willing to let their Obama slide as he goes after the money of the elitists on the west coast and the east coast, and somehow it is bad for Romney to seek donations. Really liberal how is Romney going to be any more a problem for the church than Harry Reid and his millions received by fleecing the taxpayers by using inside information?

Wow, the liberals are showing that they don't remember the news for more than about 2 days, unless it is something bad about a conservative.

If you look at the actual data, and not what Obama claims, you will find what the WSJ found in their article "The Data Behind Romney’s 47% Comments." There they show that 49% of all households receive direct government benefits. You can verify that in the article "47% in U.S. escape federal income tax" from the Herald Sun.

According to various articles, and USDA press releases, as of June 2012 we have a record number of people in the US receiving food stamps. See "USDA: Americans receiving food stamps hits record 46.7 mln people in June" in the DesMoines Register. Even the Fact Checkers at ABC agree.

Tell us, did Romney say anything that wasn't the truth? Do people who pay $0 in federal income tax care about additional tax cuts? Do people who are dependent on the government want to hear that they are being cut off, and that they have to work?

Mitt is absoljutely correct in what he says. People who get their living and other entitlements from the government do not want to see a change.

Kind of gives a whole new meaning to the Days of '47 now, doesn't it!

    On a more serious note;
The saddest irony will be finding out Senator Reid was telling the truth after all.

I can't think of a bigger PR nightmare for the LDS Church if the unthinkable is true.

Romney's right. People have learned how to get an advantage from the government. What interest do they have in change? I saw one post above that called Romney 'un-American' for his comments. Putting your trust and depending on a central government for your support in life is just about as far away from being an American as you can get. I don't recall the patriots and Concord and Lexington fighting the British Army because the government wasn't providing enough services.

There are two newspapers in Salt Lake City, Utah. The people have had their chance to read either paper. Over the years, and by design, one paper has been for people who comment about Democrat issues and other, Republican issues.

This type of forum has translated to one, politically, has no real Republican values. There are very few who comment positively about a Republican candidate in the past 18 months that Mitt Romney has been attempting to gain the nomination and hopefully the President of the United States of America.

Salt Lake City's Deseret News has had standards prior to online comments, that they use for their hard copy comments to the editor.

Is there anything virtuous, of good report or praiseworthy in this forum?

The audience can go the Salt Lake Tribune and post these kinds of comments but our President needs an accountability.

Open press will do that for both candidates but even the titles of some of these AP articles sublimate to Deseret News becoming a yellow press.

Mitt needs cash as the programs of the past 50 years have made people become like seagulls who get all their food from the handouts. Money buys everything

Some of those tax avoiders vote GOP. Well, if they were smart wouldn't any longer.

What the taxes or lack there of from Mitt's favorite people... you know corporations?

Taxing income is silly. Taxing consumption may be better?

Mitt speaks the truth! Records show that welfare; SS disability; unemployment and overseas spending of our tax dollars have gone up with Obama more and faster than any other President. And he did in in 3.5 years.
Because of these events, more people are depending on the government for support That is what Mitt is talking about. This should be taken care of by Faith Based help and personal donations. Mitt has donated more to the needy than all of this admin. put together.

Here's a lovely statement by Mitt who would be the wonderful bi-partisan leader of our Nation:

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the President no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what...These are people who pay no income tax ..."

Lies and blatant mischaracterizations are sins...And highly unAmerican! But, hey Mitt, good luck in that dash-for-cash!!!

Utah's donate a lot of money to Romney? Stop the presses!

Interesting no mention of how much money Utahn's have donated to Obama. Or any one else, for that matter.

While Utah contributions to the Obama campaign logically won't be nearly as much as Romney, as little contrast of fact might have been nice. That way we could gauge how much MORE popular in Utah Romney is than Obama. Or by what margin. Or if contributions to the Republican or Democratic party are within historical norms. Or any other factoid that may have been useful to gain perspective on an election with more than a single candidate or issue.

But this is the Deseret News, where the only angle worth reporting on is Romney.
