The Y can't play this way against better teams and expect a very successful season. Three straight trips into the red zone, and walk away with 6 points? And Riley won't last the season if he keeps running like he does. And throwing the floaters like he does. Glad they won, but not very encouraged about facing some of the tougher teams on our schedule.

Great game holding WSU to two FGs. Leach was ticked and Marquess Wilson totally frustrated.

It was great seeing some of the new talent, Friehl, Ridley, Hadley and Taysom Hill... his first D-1 snap he throws a TD! Should have let him take a few more snaps the final couple of minutes on this one.

I think Riley took too many chances, need to back off or he's going to get injured.

Great game for BYU!

And of course those PAC 12 refs. Loved the personal foul for celebration and the delay of game by rolling the ball, geesh, how lame.

Loved it!

Fair observations. Fix those and the cougars will surprise some people...especially in Salt Lake.

But around here its a "blue" zone.

Man I wish we could play the pac 10 teams all season long. WSU only scored 6 and 3 of those were a gift from their own refs according to the announcers on ESPN.

I tried to watch the Utah game but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Great start for the Cougars. Great first half and a lot to build on.

It is going to be a fun year of football!!!!

Overall I'm happy with the results for a first game. But Y's Guy you are right, BYU does need to quickly improve for those tougher games coming up.

I'm still not sure how good WSU is because of the new coach and new scheme. Their first drive looked good and they did have two long passes called back because of holding. But BYU's penalties and Riley's running and floating passes were not good and definitely need improving. Riley didn't get intercepted, but WSU had a few chances to intercept and didn't quite get it done.

A win is a win.

But, the second half was impotent, and the offensive couldn't even get one TD after having three first downs in the red zone.

Were they tired, bored, outplayed, inept?

This is a time for a very, very brief celebration and a real long look at what the offensive is supposed to do.

Thank goodness for the defense.

Only reason wazzu scored was that refs put them in field goal range twice... Very excited to see how they do against some better teams

Good lead in for this article. It was, indeed, a stomping. For a first game, the boys in blue looked pretty good. The critical comments already posted are unfair because this BYU team looked better than last year's first game (Ole Miss) or the year before (Washington). I'm looking forward to two more games against PAC-12 foes, but not if the the PAC brings its referees again. Where do they get their training?

Already said it, but this team wins or loses with defense. They were good last year, and may be great this year. As for offense, well, it was the first game, after all. And the 4th quarter looked like Bronco did not want to embarrass Leach. It was a ragged game, but an order of magnitude better than last year. The PAC12 refs were pretty terrible on at least 4 plays, but hey, first game for them too (to be charitable).

As for Nelson, well, he is Nelson warts and all. I'll take a gamer. Reminds me of Jack Kemp (Cal grad, pro in Canada, Vikings). Kemp was one of the toughest QBs I've ever seen, and he couldn't pass either. But his ruptured ducks won a lot of games.
