It would be a tall order for BYU to go undefeated but I wouldn't call it impossible. There are really just 5 games they've got to get through ... WSU, Utah, Boise St (who may drop a bit this year), GTech and Notre Dame. The rest has 2011 schedule written all over it.
That said, I'd still say the source pretty much says it all ... Deep Shades of Blue.
As a devout sunday school/fireside attender and a hardcore U Fan, can I ask that we all please stop acknowledging Chris B?
As for this article, I'm not sure why they even bother writing it. Yeah, there is a chance that BYU can be a BCS Buster this year, though I don't think it's likely. But this article didn't even begin to expound on why that is possible. It seemed like it was written just to get a reaction from all us know-it-all comment posters :) Though I did like the picture of Bryan Engstrom that they posted! He's a great, hard working running back from Alta High, who walked onto BYU and who will do well there, given the chance! Good pic, DN! Terrible article!
Don't buy any talk Bronco and Cougars about being a BCS buster.
Aug 30 is the most important date in your program's history, then Sept 8, then Sept 15...get the picture?
@ Riverton Cougar
"BYU - reads the bible together, emphasizes being the best bishops and Sunday school boys, has football at a lower priority, then finished last season ranked #25/26".
Riverton Coug, look at your schedule last year and tell us who BYU beat and who BYU lost to? You will notice that BYU's wins were against cupcakes and your losses were to the best teams on your schedule.
Oh and you can thank USC for being ineligible which disqualified them from being ranked in the coaches poll.
@ Broken Truth Machine
"BYU had back-to-back undefeated seasons in the MWC - it was non-conference losses that kept the Cougars out of a BCS bowl in 2006 and 2007".
Sorry, I wasn't specific enough for you. I was referring to BYU's time in the MWC.
In 2006:
BYU lost to Arizona (6-6)
In 2007:
BYU lost to UCLA (6-7) and Tulsa (10-4)
As a mid-major school you have to go unbeaten and losing to one mediocre team will NOT get you into the BCS. Same rules apply to being an independent. You have to go unbeaten unless your Notre Dame.
@ NightOwlAmerica
"So what do Alabama and Florida have in common? They agree that BYUs title is a fraud.
And what else do Alabama and Florida have in common? They actually make an effort to compete for more national titles. BYU does not".
You forgot one. Alabama and Florida play real teams in real conferences year in and year out. BYU does not!
PAC 12 loves to beat up on U
"So what do Alabama, Florida, and BYU all have in common? A certain crystal football trophy..."
And, ALL of them will have their opening week games broadcast nationally.
Unfortunately for U, if you have satellite, you won't even be able to watch the Utah - Northern Colorado game in Salt Lake City.
If you ask nicely, BYU might be willing to let you borrow our state-of-the-art HD broadcast truck and studio to broadcast your game on BYUtv.
Welcome to the MTN 2.0 Utah fans.
Gotta laugh at the absolutely FALSE bravado of the kids on the hill.
EVERY week is the most important week for U, because, unlike BYU, the Utes are capable of losing to ANYBODY - see UNLV(2-10) and Colorado(3-10).
Don't kid yourself into believing that you'll ever challenge for a PAC 12 title when you can't even beat the Colorado's on your schedule. Utah didn't beat a single conference opponent with a winning record in 2011.
PAC 12 loves U,
Please don't tell me you're naive enough to think that the voters had no idea who played who when they cast their votes. Why do you think an undefeated Boise State or TCU kept being ranked below 1-loss teams? They take SOS into consideration. All things considered, they were the better team as a whole last season.
It's kind of interesting that the article in question talked about Utah being underrated and perhaps better than USC; yet all anybody can talk about is the fact the article said that BYU could possibly bust the BCS. I wonder if some of these posters even read anything beyond the headline?
Why don't you guys go back to the article and actually follow the link to look at the Experience ratings the guy came up with? Then maybe you can start talking about the high regard his algorithm has for both teams.

As an Independent, we couldn't care less about the dying bcs; unlike our little brothers up north, we've always understood that playing in a bcs bowl isn't the pinnacle of college football achievement.
As always, your best is only 2nd best.
#1 > #2
we've always understood that playing in a bcs bowl isn't the pinnacle of college football achievement.
But you sure didn't mind lining up at the trough for your share of the money from those (Utah TCU) who did.
Typical hypocrisy from our little bros down south.

Times are tough in Provo. Desperate BYU fans are now comparing themselves to Alabama and Florida. Your TV ratings will not even come close to theirs.

Sounds like something to set a goal for in 2012!
I look forward to seeing Bronco wearing this new t-shirt on the sidelines.
I'm sorry, but as a huge BYU fan even I know that Riley Nelson still throws wobbly ducks that don't go 15 yards. The guy's got plenty of heart, but that only gets a team so far. BYU will have a nice season. BYU will not go to the BCS.

"Tough times" in Provo means opening the season as one of the featured opening night games on ESPN.
"Desperate times" in SLC is pretending to be excited about not being able to watch an early afternoon game on the MTN 2.0.

Weak comment.
@utebusters "EVERY week is the most important week for U, because, unlike BYU, the Utes are capable of losing to ANYBODY - see UNLV(2-10) and Colorado(3-10)."
See(4 - 8) Utah state 31 Cougies 16 same Utah state team that lost to Idaho 28-6 that year.
We can start listing big win's for Kyle and Bronco now if you want? Nevermind forgot Bronco don't have any.
@NightOwlAmerica "So what do Alabama and Florida have in common? They agree that BYUs title is a fraud."
I love bringing up the BYU's National Championship because it invariably brings out the little brother comments from Utah.
It doesn't matter what U think about it. The fact remains that BYU finished the year #1 in both polls and won the national championship. That was much less controversial than the split championship awarded in 2003 when USC was #1 in the AP poll, but LSU won the BCS National Championship.
Utah's best season (2008) saw the Utes finish at #2 in the AP Poll and #4 in the coaches poll, and the only coach who voted the Utes #1 was their own coach Kyle Whittingham, and he got reprimanded for it.
But keep the whining and feet-stomping coming, little brothers. As one of your own has famously said before..."Your tears are delicious."
Go Cougars!

Every time a cougar feels the need to remind us of or defend their 1984 National Championship here in 2012 it just gives more substance to the notion your program has "jumped the shark".
Found this on wikipedia,
The usage of "jump the shark" has subsequently broadened beyond television, indicating the moment in its evolution when a brand, design, or creative effort moves beyond the essential qualities that initially defined its success, beyond relevance or recovery.
Does that not describe BYU football starting somewhere 2000-2003?
I'd be curious to see how accurate this algorithm is when you plug in data for the last few years.
Oh, and just in case anyone is interested: 1984 was 28 years ago... longer than any college football player has been alive.
