Being able to knock on doors is the American Way (as long as you leave when asked, and don't do it at odd hours of the night). I don't think the city has a leg to stand on. More and more, the US is becoming a police state, which is to be regretted. They even shut down little kids' lemonade stands in various places because the kids don't have a license.
