Cougar Claws
Since I don't follow BYU sports, I'll take your word for it that 2 or 3 football players quit every year because of grades.
As far as your comment about it being harder academically at the Y, I guess that's why the U is ranked as one of the world's top 100 universities, and BYU is ranked somewhere in the 300's. I won't go into the U's stellar record in research and turning it into businesses, as that would just be too easy.
Welcome the the Utes, Sam! I can't wait to watch you play.
Truth be told, this doesn't really hurt BYU, and it doesn't really help Utah. This is ONE player. Both teams are ALWAYS stacked with quality linemen. This one guy is probably a great player, but he's not gonna make that much of a difference either way.
I was a little concerned when I saw Rivals rated Tevi a 2 star recruit. That fit the Y's recruiting profile. But when I saw he had the same number of offers as 17 of BYU's recruits combined and his offers were from almost three times as many BCS schools as those 17 recruits. (8 to 3). I knew I had nothing to fear. Out of the Y's 19 recruits the recruiting services indicates three also had offers from the U. At the same time of the U's 6 recruits the services indicate 3 had offers from the Y. Sounds pretty even on that score at this time - let's see how the rest of recruting unfolds.
Who am I sir? How dare you present facts in direct contradiction to what the Duckhunter proclaims! People, can we get off the idea that he was too dumb to play at the Y? This is insulting not only to him in particular, but any athlete who chooses a college to attend. The truth is none of you knows Sam, and most of you I would strongly wager, don't know any of the guys on BYU's or Utah's teams, so why the need to just make things up about them?
Congrats to Sam on making a well-thought-out decision. The hard part's over, now you can just worry about playing your last season of high school football and keep doing well in school.

"The U is one of the world's top 100 universities while BYU is somewhere in the 300s"
Any sources to back that one up?
BYU wasn't really recruiting Tevi. Bronco and his coaches must've decided that he wasn't a good fit in our program and told him he should look at a school without the tradition and tough academics. That is, a school like Utah.
Welcome to BYU after your mission.
Where does this myth of BYU's academic superiority come from? BYU's academic performance among its athletes is lower than the U's...lower average GPA, lower test scores...It is a concern of Bronco's...he said so publicly. Spreading lies is not what BYU fans should be known for. Check the majors, GPAs and academic awards of both school's athletes...pretty darn close, with the edge going to Utah; and the U has more nationally recognized programs, decorated professors, and national academic student awards. It is a very good fit for the serious student athlete. No knock on BYU, but seriously, the fans need to do their homework.
Cougar Claws:
The Shanghai report, seen as the global authority on university rankings, has listed the University of Utah in the top 100 schools in the world. The UofU entrepreneur program that connects students to funding is number one in the nation. Literature and creative writing have been ranked by the Humanities Review as among the top three for decades. Sciences have always been ranked high, by numerous independent parties. USNews has the U ranked lower than the Y, but most corporations give little credence to that study because so much weight is given to how much students like their professors...a good measure of the college experience, but not much of a measure academically. For the last 10 years the UofU school of business has placed more students in Harvard and LSE, while BYU places more students in law school and MBA schools in general. Strengths at the U are sciences, engineering, innovation in business, arts and the behavioral sciences, Law and Medicine, and of course research. BYU is more focused on the black and white fields of accounting and business management---and they do it well.
Things are looking better all the time for our Utes! Nice choice Sam...way to go Kyle! You gotta love the Utes!
Cougar Claws,
There are actually some sources that back that up, but they are based on some Chinese ranking. The most credible ranking for universities in the United States is the U.S. News and World Report, which contradicts much of what the Chinese ranking says about many of the U.S. universities. I trust that the U.S. knows more about U.S. universities than Shanghai does, and the U doesn't even crack the top 100 among U.S. universities.
hymn to the silent,
Perhaps you should do your homework. Few people say that the U surpasses the Y academically (and even then it's almost always for graduate programs). This isn't some rumor being spread by BYU fans, this is fact. I hate to have to bring you to reality that hard, but it's for the best.
Just as well, he sounds like someone who might be very talented. BYU prefers walk-ons who like to field punts.
Great pickup for the U and for the state! It's looking like we'll continue our road to dominance on the D line - our M.O. in the conference. Welcome Tevi!
Enough with the slandering each other. You will never build your own house by throwing bricks over the wall at each other.
He said he liked both growing up but probably the U more.
He got offered first by Utah and it was his dream offer.
He tripped to see Utah and took a side trip to see the Y.
He has friends on the Utah team from his high school.
He felt more comfortable at Utah.
He met with Whittingham but doesn't mention meeting with Bronco.
All this tells anyone that can fill in their own name on peice of paper he wanted to go to the University of Utah.
Nothing about where he would succeed academically.
Nothing about where he would get the best education.
Nothing about what he wanted out of his college experience.
He just wanted to go to Utah.
Now for the trolls on both sides.
I graduated Cum laude from Utah.
Never liked the place or my experiences there. That's just me. Never saw them win a game as a student.
Never went to BYU.
Loved 35 years of football at the Y.
It's just personal choice.
Regards to recruiting dominance: This is a bit silly; however, in the case for the U, quality matters over quantity. Morgan, Kyle, and the others recruit hard and are genuine until they get or lose the prospect that they "really" want. Others can be given an offer without much contact afterwards. Players looking are treated so well at the U by coaches, players, and parents, that it makes a huge impact on the outcome. I have a several parent friends whose kids were recruited by both schools and their experiences were definitely different. But a huge factor at the U was the "genuineness" of the process; and yet, a few of them still went to BYU because of their family loyalty (was a dream).
I say good for all of them - I say that these kids are living a dream regardless of their pick. But I sure do like wins like this one!!!
With all of the commits coming out of Euless, TX going to the "U", maybe the town should change its name from Euless to "U-more"? Or maybe, "BYu-less"?
"Salebarn: you do know that academic marks for athletes are higher at the U than at BYU, right? (look it up)"
I looked, and facts are not your friends Hymns, Meso Ute, Ohio Ute, LdsFan, et al.
Here are the facts:
2011 U.S. News and World Report put BYU at No. 71 and Utah at No. 124. The magazine based its figures on, among other things, academic entry data, graduation rates and strength of faculty.
Nationally ranked colleges/programs (top 50): BYU-5 (including Marriott School of Management and BYU Law School) , UU-0 (Business Week, Wall Street Journal, US New and World Report)
Ave. Starting salaries undergrads: MIT, $45K (top); BYU $39.5K; UU $34.2K. (2009)
Average ACT of entering Freshmen: BYU 28, UU 22.7 (2008 data) Athletes entry data mirrors the general student body (thanks to XC and track athletes).
National Merit Scholars (entering freshmen 2009): BYU 90 (Ranked 23rd nationally), UU 23 (not ranked)
Graduates Getting Ph.D's/MD's: BYU #10, UU not ranked (source: NORC/University of Chicago)
A academic comparison reflects their differences in purpose. Utah generally serves a local commuter population. BYU is a private university drawing from a much larger and competative geography, admission policies, codes of conduct, and study focuses are very different.
Riverton Cougar-
As a pre-med student at the University of Utah, I've never heard any Utah or BYU fan tell me that i would be better off at BYU. Not one person. Your comment is ENTIRELY opinionated and holds no weight.
Sorry, Riverton Coug and Salebarn, your "smarter-than-thou" attitudes aren't working.
The U.S. News & World Report does NOT provide "the most credible" rankings. While they may be the most widely used in the U.S., they have been criticized for indefensible methodology. The founder used criteria that insures Harvard, Yale and Princeton are always the top three, making it a club-y popularity contest designed to sell more magazines. (When an employee tried to implement a more statistically valid criteria, and Cal Tech came out on top, she was gone.) It's therefore no surprise that USNWR ranked BYU at 71 in the U.S. (behind Case Western and Cal Irvine) and Utah at 124 (ahead of Seton Hall, Temple and Rutgers).
The Academic Ranking of World Universities was begun to measure the gap between Chinese universities and the rest of the world. It relies more on research indicators and per capita academic performance. Thus, it is no surprise that ARWU ranks Utah No. 46 in the U.S. and 79 in the world, while BYU is ranked in the 111-137 group nationally and 301-400 in the world.
