The only olympic events held in Salt Lake besides the opening and closing ceremonies were the ice skating events. Every other sporting event was held outside of Salt Lake. So why does Becker care?
@Flashback - That is really simple. The State cannot make a bid. The rules say that it has to be done by a city and Salt Lake is the logical one. It was the host in 2002, it is the capital city and it is the one best known. Park City in the winter sports world is not far behind, but SLC is the logical choice.
As to whether or not we should do it again, there is not enough information available to make a good business decision.
@Flashback,
Salt Lake City also housed all the athletes, hosted daily events at the City/County building. The Salt Lake City International Airport, which is owned by Salt Lake City had a huge increase in traffic.
I guess since those are technically sporting events, they don't count, right?
Structures like the ones constructed for the 2002 Olympics need refurbishment every couple of decades anyway, so you might as well let another Olympic games pick up the tab through sale of television broadcast rights, etc. As for which city should sponsor it, Salt Lake has the brand name with the goodwill of a successful Games and a leg up in national and international competition for the IOC. It also has the stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, the space at the convention center for the international news media, the hotel rooms, the centrality for transportation to all the venues. No one nationally or internationally is familiar with the city boundaries of Salt Lake City. They think the speed skating oval in Kearns is in "Salt Lake".
The Olympic Committee is probably concerned that the honesty prevalent in Utah will once again eliminate much of the bribe money to them that became a part of the bidding process.
Will UT still get adequate snowfall in 10+ yrs?
Captain Green and I are similarly skeptical of the Olympic Committee and what is 'really' important to them......
