Millennials have a lot of great qualities that can often be focused on as
negative attributes when first looking at them, as the Young Entrepreneurial
Council statistics in this article show. This younger generation has an entirely
different set of skills than the generations before them, and managers of
Millennials can find out what matters to these twenty-somethings and find out
how to motivate them. The company I work for is studying the challenges managers
face with the younger generation.
It used to be that companies would run "Google searches" on applicants
to check out their histories and reputations online. Today, companies are using
Facebook to evaluate potential hires -- likes, topics they discuss (including
bad mouthing previous employers), silly or embarrassing pictures, etc., are all
on the table now. Some companies are even asking applicants to be
"friended" so that they can personally check out social media pages.
Applicants, desparate for jobs, end up doing so.The bottom line is
that anything you post online is considered "public information," even
if it is password-protected. Given the archiving and loose/faulty privacy
mechanisms on Facebook where company IT departments find ways to override, the
fad of social media is destined to haunt people for their lifetimes.
I think business managers are justified with their concerns because the new
generations don't have the capacity to endure long term ethical job
performance. They may say they wouldn't use or spend working hours on
socializing but the facts say different. From observations, the young don't
have the capacity to cope with stress do a job to completion so they have many
jobs as work in progress with none of them being completed or marginally
complete with all kinds of excuses why its not done.So called techno
geeks never finish what they start, not even in what they read. Every obstacle
is more that their attention span can tolerate. Every time an obstacle is met,
the young revert to the security of their imaginary lives in the cyber world.
