Yes, that would really be a shame if the US carriers were forced to compete.
Perhaps they would be a little more lenient, where now they tend to not mind
sticking us with certain "gotcha" charges, which are usually incredibly
high and unfair (i.e. over minute limits, over data limits).
I travel for work throughout the pacific and asia, and the flexibility of having
an unlocked GSM device allows me to simply change the SIM card no matter where I
am. The extra money you pay upfront is worth it considering you won't be
locked into a carriers calling and data plan and will have the flexibility to
shop carriers. Of course US carriers won't like it because they'll
have to compete instead of having the apple welfare deal that AT&T had. This
is definitely a plus for consumers.
