He was for the draft before he was against it? Or he was for it as long as he was not the one drafted?
One word: Repentance
Wow - a pretty gripping story. Makes one wonder what else will come to the surface. I bet there's a speeding ticket we don't know about.

I think I'm having "second thoughts".

To have "second thoughts," one must first have a thought. But keep trying.
WOW!!! I don't know if I dare vote for someone that was told he would be fined, and then got arrested, after he opted to accept the fine. That is pretty low class if you ask me. And I bet those protests were pretty violent, I am sure that they were like those crazy tea party protests, not like the mild war demonstrators or the occupy Wall Street people.
I am so proud of the Democrats that they are able to dig up such dirt on Romney, come on, doesn't he have friends like Reverend Wright or Bill Ayers? Oh wait, he married his high school sweet heart after his mission and has been devoted to her and his family. But then Anne is pretty spunky, they could compare her to Wright and Ayers. So speaking of Anne, I have really wondered if President Obama and Michelle were more a professional or arranged marriage. I do credit the President, at this point, I believe he is faithful to her, but I have no doubt about Romney and his faithfulness.
To all who are commenting on an unverified comment.
The comment said he got an educational deferment, then got a deferment to do a mission (which is entirely allowed) and sometime thereafter put his name in for the draft. He exposed himself to being drafted (which he supported) and did not get drafted. Many did not get drafted because of a high number. Luck of the draw. He did not dodge it, just because you are unfamiliar with the terminology does not give you the right to make unfounded and inaccurate statements. He did not dodge, he did go through the selection process. he just did not get picked to serve. Not his fault and not his doing.
Even Mitt's "bad" things reek of someone who's so rich he has absolutely no perspective of the common man. License? Bah, I'm above the law!
That's it?
I respect anyone who protested against the draft, or---okay--even for it (in the face of overwhelming campus opposition). But a guy who protested in favor of the war in Vietnam and yet found ways of not serving himself? Folks, those are not the actions of a man. That is a petulant rich boy who loves the idea of our country going to war and being tough-as long as someone else does the actual grunt work.
To those criticizing Mr. Romney for "supporting the Viet Nam war" and then "dodging the draft", please read the article again.
He did not support the war, he supported the concept of the draft. And he did not "dodge" the draft. That is what Mr. Clinton did.
Clinton received a deferment (just like Romney) as an undergrad student, but then as a graduate student, submitted to the draft (just like Romney did). However, Clinton was drafted, but then escaped to Oxford sans deferment. He joined the ROTC to avoid the military, but never showed up for that either. THAT is called dodging the draft, and somehow Dems love Clinton for it. And to top it all off, Clinton admits to submitting to the draft and then faking interest in the ROTC merely to maintain his future political viability, ie, so it wouldn't jeopardize his planned political career.
When Romney's legitimate deferments ended, he submitted himself to the draft. He drew a high number and was never called up. So, he supported the draft, played by the rules, was subjected to the draft, and never dodged.
@reenie72:
You are of course referring to President Clinton's infidelity over and over. Or is that Kennedy, or FDR, or Eisenhower, or Harding? You are creating a straw man argument by trying to introduce another person's issues to distract people from commenting on Mitt Romney's issues.
I for one, am with cjb on this one. It's really odd that people like Mitt Romney, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Rush Limbaugh, are all GOP Hawks who were in favor of the Vietnam War and The Draft, but all managed to take deferments rather than serve themselves.
I served in the army, and I really couldn't care less who did or did not serve in the Vietnam era army. Those were different times. However, it's the inconsistency which bothers me, and that goes for 90% of all politicians, regardless of party affiliation.
Wow. The comments here are a bit over the top don't you think. I initially thought this was a light hearted piece meant to entertain us. Or, like those defense lawyers I see on Law and Order, the DN was trying to beat the prosecution to the punch and got all the bad news about Romney out in the open before someone made it look like he was hiding something. I don't think this author and the DN could ever be accused of diggin up dirt against Romney and I challenge anyone to show evidence that it was the Obama campaign organization that dug this story up. They would be laughed off the editorial pages for presenting this as anything but evodence of Romney's purity.
But it gave the usual suspects an opportunity to spout off about everything from Gitmo to Jeremiah Wright to the infidelity of Bill Clinton. Funny how nobody ever mentions that Reagan conceived his daughter Patti out of wedlock (married March 4, 1952 and she was born October 21, 1952 - you do the math.) Oops! Did I say that? See what these little meaningless articles bring out in all of us.
Was he born in the United States? Can he run for President?Wasn't he a socialist in Massachusetts? Why need Nevada go for Ron Paul?
Oooo, he launched a boat! Before too long I bet he'll be parking his car in a way that will take up two spaces! This guy is a rebel.
Have fun with this one desperate Dems.
Big deal. This is like the dog on the roof of the car story.
I am a retired Air Force Officer and helped install the all volunteer force so that people like the ones commenting negatively above would not need to serve. I find Romney to be a true patriot who if called upon to serve would have served with distinction. Romney's leadership and patriotism cannot be questioned while I am sure that those who rile against him have lots of skelitons in their closets.
I'm in the same boat as Romney. OK, let me get this off my chest. I torn off several "Do not remove" tags on the pillows I bought at RC Willy. I hired a guy who was cleaning the restrooms at Walmart to landscape my yard even though I suspected he entered the country illegally; and I failed to report the profit I made in a garage sale to IRS. These crimes have been worrying me since 1981 and for several years I couldn't sleep, but feel better now.
Lest we think that Mitt Romney is simply perfect.....
Arrogant and above the law? Richie Rich strikes again!
Who cares, seriously. Can we grow up and have an actual debate about issues this time around, instead of the embarrassing campaigns that revolved around the last 2 Presidential elections.
I don't care if Mitt is a Mormon, or if he got a ticket 30 years ago, or if he was mean to his dog 25 years ago. What I care about is that all Mitt wants to do is reinact the failed policies that led us into the near Depression. That's plenty reason enough to run away from him and his campaign.
Likwise, I'm sick of hearing that President Obama is a Socialist, is just like Hitler, isn't really as patriotic as the Republicans, might still be a Muslim, isn't even a US Citizen, isn't as good a Christian as Santurom or Romney, and hates America. Basically all of the Fox News/Sarah Palin rhetoric. Lets have a grown up debate about issues, not about fear mongering.
