Regarding the ESPN poll: I thought the 1984 BYU football championship was pretty high, Utah's 2008 undefeated season with a win over Bama in the '09 Sugar Bowl and John Stockton sending the Jazz to the finals with his shot v Houston were all big.

But the 2002 Winter games should be the top moment for the state....

Olympics for sure are the most important thing, then Stockton over Barkley, Utah Sugar Bowl and BYU's championship, followed by RSL's MLS cup, then Utah' '44 championship.

I agree with Lonster, The Utah Stars ABA championship in 1971 was the biggest!

Last month, I saw a middle-aged woman wearing a "Salt Lake 2002" Olympics ball cap on the subway all the way back here in Philadelphia, and she wasn't the first person I'd seen wearing '02 Olympics paraphrenalia. I've NEVER seen anyone wearing ANYTHING remotely reflective of the Y's '84 shampionship -- not even from the cougar alumni in my stake. Utah's victories in the '05 Fiesta and '09 Sugar Bowls are only "talked" about; not displayed on hats and T-shirts across the city, and those discussions only come up when folks hear I'm a Utah alumnus. All the "water cooler" talk about those games died out within a month of those games played.

Clearly, the Olympics had been the brightest moment in Utah sports history.

Just a note that CFN post spring poll has the Utes ranked 13th!!

Uh...the poll is for U of U moments, not ABA, BYU, Olympics or who knows what else... Read the article peeps!

I'd say the Sugar Bowl victory was the best, with the '98 NCAA run as a VERY close second. The Fiesta Bowl victory is obviously up there too, but the 'Bama game was one of the best sporting games I've ever watched! (Obviously I'm biased, but even non-fans would have to admit that it was pretty awesome - Barry Switzer even ate some crow during that game!)

Hate to tell you, Shawnm, but the actual ESPN poll is for all sports moments for the state of Utah. You have to click on the link.

Winter Olympics was the most important sports moment for the state of Utah. I get to pay homage to the '02 Olympics at every Ute home football game. The committee came to the U and said "this is the place", just like Brigham!

Seeing Jimmer slam a half court shot in the HC gets my vote!

"But the 2002 Winter games should be the top moment for the state...."

Agreed completely. 2002 Winter Games without a doubt.

1) Utah pounding a 10 point favorite Alabama team in their own back yard.
1a) Andre Miller taking the Utes on his shoulder as they beat San Fran, Arkansas, West Virginia, Arizona, then North Carolina in the NCAA's.

let's be fair here:

2) BYU's crew of Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts, Greg Kite and Devin Durrant knocking off Notre Dame in the NCAA's
2a) BYU running the table, winning the NCAA championship, by beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Too bad the BCS wasn't around then. I don't think BYU would have won the NC, but you never know.

Farmington, UT

lets be fair here:
BYU never played Michigan in the Rose Bowl, they played in the Holiday Bowl against a 6-5 team.
BYU has never played in the Rose Bowl period. nice try though!

@ divotmaker
My mistake. Yes it was the Holiday Bowl.

Do you feel better now?

@112 Pack
"BYU running the table..."

The kids table. They didn't play a single ranked team. Even in the "championship game."

Call it what you want, but they won every game that year and were crowned National Champion. I know all about who they played and that they beat a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl.

Notice I put the Utes 2009 season ahead. That year Utah beat four (4) final BCS, top 25 teams. The Sugar Bowl victory was so awesome!

I hope that makes everyone Happy..................but I doubt it will!

@112 Pack,

I actually hadn't noticed that, glad you pointed that out. I agree that Utah's beat down of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, capping an undefeated season against quality opponents, was the greatest accomplishment of any team in our state, ever. I also agree that BYU's undefeated 84 season was a great accomplishment. I thing you have the order about right.

I don't even know why Jimmer would be a choice. Andrew Bogut won all the awards Jimmer won and was the #1 overall pick of the NBA, and I wouldn't even put Bogut as a choice for Utah's top sports moments.

Now, if you put Bogut and Alex Smith both being taken as #1 picks by their respective sports, something NO other school in history has done, I would accept that as a choice. Still not better than the Olympics, but lightyears above Jimmer.

Of course, Lonster has a point - how can you beat the Big Z/Ron Boone freight train?

It would be Wise not to over look the Stars

This is about sports "moments" so I'm not sure about the olympics being the best moment although I definately think it was the biggest, and most important, sporting event in the history of the state. Next would have to be BYU's Football National Championship. Deride it all you want utah "fans" but winning the National Championship in football, the biggest prize in college sports, is bigger than anything else ever done in college sports in this state. It was a great moment.

It is still talked about, for good or bad, and probably always will be. All other college athletic moments in this state are only even discussed by arguing fans of the two schools. BYU's National Championship is a nation wide discussion point to this day.
