It won't. You're not a BCS quality program, can't recruit BCS quality "athletes" and have baggage that no one wants.
No BCS league is calling because you're not wanted.
LOL!
No need to even worry here cougar fans.
You'd have to be a top 5 team to be considered and have to worry about inclusion in this final 4.
In the last 10 year Utah has TWICE ended the season in the top 5 and would have been part of this "final 4"
and byU?
Congratulations on your upcoming WAC championship - I know riley can do it
Hmmm... interesting. The benefit of joining a BCS conference was just cut in half. I would assume some profit sharing but maybe that only goes to the teams playing in the games. Looks like the SEC is going to get richer though at the cost of the other "BCS" conferences.
Chris B, you're forgetting something. You're looking at the FINAL ranking, but for consideration of playing in this playoff, you need to be in the top 4 after the regular season ends. How many times would Utah have been in the final 4 in the last poll BEFORE the post-season started? ZERO, even including your beloved 2004 and 2008. Go ahead and look for yourself if you don't believe me. Utah has only been ranked in the top 4 AFTER a bowl game.
BYU? They were in the top 5 for a long time and secured the #1 ranking within the last few weeks of the season in 1984. I know, I know... it's a long time ago. But, this would likely hurt Utah as much as BYU, since neither seems to be good enough to be in the top 4 at the end of the regular season.
The BCS is flawed due to its reliance on pre-season polls to seed possible contenders before the season even starts.
I'll bite.
I think the upcoming changes can only help BYU. In all honesty, the BCS and AQ status are ridiculous concepts meant to exclude the 'lesser'. This has started to ruin college football in my opinion. The rich get richer and the poor stay poor.
I really do hope BYU ends up in the Big 12. It would be awesome having Pac 12/Big 12 teams come to Utah every year. Maybe this is just the Ute fan in me speaking, but BYU is going to struggle to pull in some of the elite and local talent like they have in the past if they remain independent. High school kids dream of playing in college football atmospheres that Utah is now exposed to. BYU will get high profile teams scheduled, there's no doubt about that. But having to fill a number of holes with regional mid-majors won't help BYU reel in recruits.
I'll admit that BYU is one of a few programs that can/could successfully operate as an independent, but the way college football is now structured puts a threshold, so to speak, on what BYU can achieve on a competitive basis.
The problem is........BYU must win games against good teams........which they haven't done in a long time. BYU will NEVER sniff a BCS bowl game.
I'm looking forward to BYU's November schedule, big games on ESPN 8 maybe.......a bye, Idaho, SJSU and NMSU during rivalry week..............sweet!
Does not change a thing.
Utah will get the cash and still belong to a premiere conference.
Get it over with BYU, just join the Big Least or Big 12-2 and go for the money. Otherwise you will still have scheduling problems.
Nobody other schools are going to jump on your independent band wagon.
@ UtahUte16, BYU will never be invited to the Big 12. Not one official from the Big 12 has ever talked to BYU. Not one time! Plus, there are three vetos waiting for BYU........Baylor, Oklahoma State and TCU. BYU does NOT fit in with the Big 12 culture in any way.
Comments on BCS changes:
* BYU will always have the top sport programs in the state.
* Although BYU has national champions in several sports, football and basketball will have the TV coverage making them the true "University of Utah".
* The utes will never win a conference or national championship in anything.
Just from what little I've seen, this new format will help BYU's scheduling. If the top four teams are selected for the playoff/championship game, schools will have a disincentive to schedule the dividion 2 teams and will look to upgrade their non-conference games and therefore scheduling a BYU becomes more desireable.
Any thoughts?
So what is the value of belonging to a "BCS" conference? Nothing, as it appears that there will be no such thing as a BCS conference (when the SEC commish says that he hopes the BCS doesn't survive, the BCS won't survive). So then what is the value of belonging to a football conference at all? Scheduling? Bowl Tie-ins? Maybe, but this pretty much eliminates any incentive for Notre Dame to join a conference and gives teams with strong national followings an incentive to consider going independent. What happens when USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, etc. decide that they can make more money by having their own networks, and negotiating their own contracts and bowl tie-ins?
You know that the formation of some sort of a college football playoff is a sign of the times don't you?
BYU's schedule will only get worse. Utah will dump them and no PAC 12 team will schedule BYU after the Big 10 affiliation gets rolling. Even Georgia Tech recently cancelled a game with BYU. I think BYU fans should get ready for the program being dissolved. It is most probable they will lose the ESPN deal. Last years BYU tv ratings were atrocious.
Glad to see the Ute partisans puffing up their chests about the BCS thing once again. That's really surprising (not really) after they failed to get to the inagural PAC 10.2 Title Game with a greased schedule. To allieve the pain of losing to Colorado they point to the Y's schedule of Idaho. Well, at least the Y beat Idaho, more than the U did regarding Colorado. I'm glad the rivalry is ending because now Utah will be on the bottom of the PAC 12 (like Arizona has been for decades) instead of the upper third of the MWC. Anyone with an ounce of brains can see the BCS is falling apart and that the SEC thinks they ARE college football, sans everyone else. Just look at last years championship matchup; the SEC would love that to happen every year. Once again, it's too early to tell the exact fallout, Ute partisans, especially for team #12 of 12 in the PAC. But keep pounding BYU into the ground verbally---that's your true goal every year!
@Utah-Hawaii Alum
Care to provide a reference for your claim about BYU's TV ratings?
@ Jeff29, go look them up for yourself bro!
Since the term Cougars has some connotation to it now and some schools are changing their mascot because of it, maybe BYU should change their mascot to the turtles since they "turtle" at the chance of better competition.
Really, if the Mega-Conference goes through (C-USA and MWC), BYU will likely be passed by big conferences for games and will only be able to schedule the MAC, the Sun Belt, and FCS teams.
Here is what I suggest: initiate football programs for BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii, LDS Business College, UVU, and maybe a few satellite locations along with South Virginia and create the Pickle Juice Conference.
If BYU wanted respect, they would have joined the Big East or Big 12. It is apparent they like their lucrative contract with the Ocho that is immediately followed by the latest abdominal machine infomercial, their sweet deal with BYU TV, and their Globetrotters vs. Washington Generals schedule. GOOD TIMES! I think I will go crack open a Root Beer right now!
Chris B
Not sure how being #5 gets you into one of 4 spots in a playoff...
As evidenced, yet again, on these posts, U fans will be content with finishing in the lower third of the PAC whatever, as long as they think they have a mud-ball to the only team they EVER will compare themselves to - BYU.
One thing will alays be certain, and that is that no matter how well BYU performs, our loyal Ute pen pals will be there to remind us that we didn't do better.
