"ESPN.com reports that Rose Bowl tradition could be a monkey wrench as the BCS mulls over a playoff system. The Pac-12 and Big Ten have a great desire to maintain meetings in Pasadena."
Simple solution: Just start a playoff without the Big Ten and PAC 12. If they choose not to participate, that's their choice.

Would it upset tradition if Colorado/Utah faced Nebraska in the Rose Bowl?
Rose Bowl officials are upset if the B1G representative is any team other than Michigan or Ohio State. And of course the PAC12 representative is always USC (when not on probation).
