Coaching, D-. The Cougars haven't been able to hit from 3 all year, yet keep jacking them up, shooting themselves out of games against tough opponents.
How can you give the bigs a B? D would be more appropriate... they were dominated, Davies 2 rebounds and how many dumb fouls and turnovers? Elias Harris had 15 rebounds... Noah did about as good as he could on one leg and amazingly had 5 blocks... but Noah, Davies and Austin had a combined 7 rebounds...
Charles and Carlino were horrible on defense... how do you make Kevin Pangos look like Chris Paul? blew by them constantly
How sad. But for nearly 2 months, Dave Rose continued to encourage the 3-pointer, when not a single person on the team could hit it consistently. Hartsock and Davies were the only players on the floor. I have not been this disappointed in BYU in a long long time. But I wish all these young men well in future endeavors. It's just a game.
Coach Rose seems to have been outcoached by Gonzaga'scoach, perhaps Y really misses Coach who went to UNLV this year? I like Coach Rose, and the other side of this is that perhaps he has done an outstanding job, given that so many new players, including 5 freshmen and another first time player, and the injuries to players that hurt performance.
I like the idea of Y playing in and going deep into the NIT this year, as a great experience for the freshmen, and more home games for the Cougars.
Overall grade of C?
If A is excellent, B is good, and C is average, Gurney seems to be allowing is partiality to lean toward a bit of grade inflation.
We got schooled on the boards and 3 point shooting. Carlino hurt us again with poor shooting, turnovers, and poor defense. Problem is he is still the best PG Rose has, because the other alleged PG's (Cusick and Winder) are non-producers. Carlino should get better with more experience.
Early in the season BYU was a very, very good rebounding team. Now they are sub-par.
I think the grade is inflated. Gonzaga came out to play like it was a matter of survival. BYU didn't.
