BYU is 24-7 (better than most predicted) and knocking on the door of the big dance, while the Utes (in an inferior basketball conference) are 6-22 and wondering if they should get another new coach for next season. It's good to be a Cougar!
I for one am tired of this Bracketology stuff. Let the committee decide where teams go and let everything fall into place. I get tired of hearing about inferior and supposedly superiour confrences. At the end of the day...anyone can beat the other team....Just ask Stanford.
@ IndianaCoug
"BYU is 24-7 (better than most predicted) and knocking on the door of the big dance, while the Utes (in an inferior basketball conference) are 6-22 and wondering if they should get another new coach for next season".
Are you okay IndianaCoug? You seem a little delusional today. The Pac-12 an inferior conference to the WCC? ROFL! I think not! Let's take a look at which conference has won more National Championships.
WCC: 2 National Championships (San Francisico winning those 2 titles)
San Francisco is the backbone of this conference as far as tournament success goes.
Pac-12: 16 National Championships (UCLA 11, Arizona 1, California 1, Oregon 1, Stanford 1, Utah 1) Multiple schools in the Pac-12 won National Championships!
The Pac-12 "Conference of Champions" is more superior! Period!!!
Utah doesn't need a new coach. Coach K is doing a great job with what he has to work with. Utah's season this year was expected, in fact the Utes exceeded most peoples expectations this year. Give Utah a couple of years of recruiting Pac-12 level talent and we'll be back as strong as ever.
Hey News For U. Might want to stop living in the past. I am sure Indiana Coug is talking about this year. You do know the PAC 12 is ranked #10 in conference RPI this year...right? I know they are ahead of the WCC, but it is a very slight margin. So your statement:
The Pac-12 "Conference of Champions" is more superior! Period!!!
That is pretty funny, considering it has been 15 years since the PAC 10 (plus 2) has won a National Championship. I thought BYU fans lived in the past. LOL!! It is also funny that the Superior conference is just a fraction higher than the lowly WCC. In fact, the WCC could end up ahead of the PAC 12. How is the mighty PAC (pathetic as a conference)12 behind Conference USA, Missouri Valley and the A10? How is it that your top 4 teams are a combined 0-17 against Top 50 RPI teams. How is it that the conference of champions only has 1 Top 50 win as a conference?
I had no idea that Mike Krzyzewski was coaching the Utes. WOW, that is cool. Can Ute fans at least come up with something original. I mean first it was the 'Team down South'. Can you believe Michigan fans copied Urban and now call Ohio State that? Also the "U" sign with your hands. I hear that the Miami Hurricanes are now doing that. Now Duke steals the Coach K nickname.
RE: News for U
I have News for U. There is not a single team in the PAC12 that is currently ranked. Better yet, in the AP poll BYU (the #3 team in the WCC) has 6 votes, which is twice as much as Cal, the top team in the PAC12, and the only team in the mighty PAC with any votes at all. Now obviously the PAC has a greater history in basketball (and most other sports) than the WCC, but since the mighty Utes joined (which is the time frame you care about, right?) they've been dropped to not even being able to compete with the likes of the MWC or the WCC. How the mighty have fallen!
one and done, if they make it
factcheck:
"IndianaCoug" called the 10th-ranked Pac-12 "an inferior basketball conference" to the 11th-ranked WCC...and YOU'RE calling out "News For U"? Yep...typical cougar hypocrisy. You even ADMIT that the Pac-12 is ranked higher. If the Pac-12 ranks above the WCC - regardless of the margin - then by definition, the Pac-12 IS "more superior" to the WCC. Case closed.
Sorry to burst your bubble, News For U, but Utah has NEVER won a national championship in basketball.
Utah may have won the 2nd rate tournament of the day in 1944, but undefeated, Army(15-0), won the National Championship.
It's ludicrous to even think of trying to attach the "national championship" label to a team that lost THREE pickup games
Fort Warren 59-61
Salt Lake Air Base 39-54
Dow Chemical 36-46
and only beat TWO legitimate college teams
Idaho State and Colorado College
during the "regular" season.
AZ Dave
"one and done"???
Isn't that what the Utes have been for the last SEVEN years COMBINED?
I'll take one and done over none and done and a six win season any year!
Truth Machine:
"Sorry to burst your bubble, News For U, but Utah has NEVER won a national championship in basketball...Utah may have won the 2nd rate tournament of the day in 1944, but undefeated, Army(15-0), won the National Championship."
If you were to Google "1944 mens basketball national champion" you will see several hits for the University of Utah...but none for West Point. Even the USMA doesn't recognize themselves as having won a national championship in basketball. Ever. The only NC Army shows in 1944 was in Football.
Utah won the NCAA's Nat'l Championship in 1944, then won the NIT in 1947. Now go wipe your tears.
Hey Naval Vet. Here you are again on yet another BYU article calling out BYU fans. I agree that Indiana Coug saying the PAC 12 is an inferior conference may be open to debate. I was calling out News 4U who said it was not even open to debate. My point was that the PAC 12 may in fact be inferior. I get it, the PAC 12 is a mere fraction higher in the the WCC (.5234 v .5159)Now that is something to be proud of! LOL
The MWC has been higher RPI than the ACC all year, but UNLV, SDSU and UNM are not in the discussion when it comes to a National Championship, but Duke and UNC both have a shot. So is it accurate to say the Mountain West is better than the ACC this year? Yes, but The only reason is because BC and Georgia Tech are below ALL the MWC teams, bringing the conference RPI down, kind of like the Utes have done this year and past years in the MWC. I would argue the ACC is actually better than the MWC just like the WCC is better than the PAC 12 for the same reason. The Top 3 in the WCC would be 1,2 and 3 if they were in the PAC 12. WA, AZ, Cal and Oregon would be battling LMU and SF for 4th place if they were in the WCC. As far as the Utes they would be bottom 2-3 in either conference.
factcheck:
IndianaCoug did NOT say the top-3 WCC teams > the top-3 Pac-12 teams, and rightly so. There is no evidence to support that, and it'll all get worked out in the NCAA tournament anyway. So, once again, when IndianaCoug called the 10th-ranked Pac-12 "inferior" to the 11th-ranked WCC, IndianaCoug was wrong. #10 > #11. Case closed.
And, since you called out News For U for stating #10 > #11, and NOT IndianaCoug for arguing otherwise, that makes you a hypocrite. Case closed. Now own it.
Wow!...The Y haters and the trolls are racking up a huge stat lately...deflections. Pull out the conference smack to deflect from the horrible season and bottoming out of a once-proud program.
Their fierce attachment to past PAC12 prowess is akin to Puerto Rico claiming honors for helping the allied forces defeat the axis powers. "Hey, we're a U.S. territory!"
"Hey, we're in the PAC12!" Why not save the conference talk for when you actually bring up the conference credibility instead of dragging it down. It will likely happen, but not in the near future.
Every pundit I've listened to this season agrees BYU has strengthened the WCC. Not one has said that about the Utes and their impact on the PAC12.
The Utes have two games left to see if they can win at least ONE conference game on the road. The Cougs are playing to secure/solidify ANOTHER NCAA bid/seed in what has been a string of consistent years that has made the team a force in the West...right now.
Sorry if all that causes you heartburn, Ute trolls. Those are the current, present, in-the-now facts. Time to start dealing.
BBall smack talk from the hill? It's a scream in the form of a whisper.
Naval Vet
Once again your Ute bias is clouding reality.
"The Helms Athletic Foundation was an athletic foundation based in Los Angeles, founded in 1936 by Bill Schroeder and Paul Helms. It put together a panel of experts to select National Champion teams and make All-America team selections in a number of college sports including football and basketball. The panel met annually[citation needed] to vote on a National Champion until 1982 and retroactively ranked football teams dating back to 1883 and basketball back to 1901. The Helms Foundation also operated a Hall of Fame for both college sports."

1944 - Army 15-0
Hey Naval Vet. Not sure why my last post was denied, but you told me to "own it" I am not sure what you are saying. Upon second look of conference power rankings on real time rpi, it turns out the PAC 12 is 2 spots behind the WCC and just ahead of the WAC.
