"Brewster said she's leaning toward Texas Rep. Ron Paul. "I really like him," she said. "He seems to have a lot of common sense. But I don't think he's going to win."
Paul is the only one of the four candidates still in the race who has not won a state"-from the article
Great little jab there. Ron Paul has won a state if you count Maine, where all kinds of shenanigans took place to make sure Romney won. Did the Deseret News run any stories about the failure to count hundreds of votes in a very tight race? I didn't see any. I'm glad the Deseret News was able to suspend belief about the integrity of the vote count in Maine so they could continue with their narrative, "Ron Paul is the only one to not win a state."
I'm LDS and I prefer Santorum over Romney. I believe Santorum has been more consistent on the social issues. I can also identify more with him. He comes from a working class family and understands that we need to rebuild our manufacturing base. Romney, although a decent family man, has flip flopped on several social issues and his rich background makes me wonder if he understands the problems of the average American.
I'm LDS and I prefer Romney over Santorum. Romney is more consistent on how to balance the budget, create jobs, fix the economy and shrink government. These are the things that are killing America. He will lower taxes. On the social issues - he is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-marriage between one man and one woman - what more do you want?
Those who slam him because of his "rich background" are jealous and full of envy.
Most important - all of the polls indicate Romney is the most likely GOP candidate to beat The Anointed One. In the end, that is what really matters.
It doesn't matter what religion I am. I prefer Romney as he has actually done something in life and has spent years in public service without taking a government paycheck, Olympics, governor, missionary and would do so in the White House. Rick has been on the government payroll most of his life. Besides, Santorum hasn't a chance of beating obama.
Romney, a decent family man. Really? I'd say he is a great family man. Character is what counts, not the fact that you happened to be born into a wealthy family. I'd say Romney has accomplished a lot even though he could have lived off the family name and trusts.
I agree with those who highlight Mitt Romney's professional successes - he can actually perform. An interesting view from Santorum in 2007:
The Elephant in the Room | Mitt Romney and religion; politics and faith
December 20, 2007|By Rick Santorum
Would the potential attraction to Mormonism by simply having a Mormon in the White House threaten traditional Christianity by leading more Americans to a church that some Christians believe misleadingly calls itself Christian, is an active missionary church, and a dangerous cult?
These articles are getting wearisome, especially in a publication that is a voice for Romney. Rajeeve Gupta got it right with the comment he made in the last sentence of the article. And Mike Leavitt, complaining about government being too big? Are you kidding me? The same Mike Leavitt who personally was involved in the decision to ban the government from being able to negotiate Medicaire drug prices, pushing up the cost to the taxpayers by billions. It is this kind of hypocrisy that astounds me. I'm sorry, Leavitt cast his lot and now I give no credence to anything he says.
Thank you David King. The Media in Utah has successfully blocked any news on Ron Paul. People don't think for themselves anymore. But since I have to answer for my vote... I'm voting Ron Paul.
Those two are scary dudes. Should they become President and Vice President.......
Santorum is a great guy but the fact that all his experiences are from government which is exactly the same experiences Obama has. Both Rick and Barack has never done anything in their private lives except running for office and paid by government.
Mitt on the other hand had been extremely successful on his own and will bring those experiences to the White House for a change.
Either are preferable to the existing
Evidently, there isn't a single Mormon Obama backer in Michigan. How do we know? Because of the exhaustive search by the author who sampled a handful of LDS members, all evidently members of the same ward in an upscale Detroit suburb. I certainly hope no one takes the article to be scientific or intended to show a random sample of voters, even GOP voters. Do LDS members in Michigan constitute even 1% of likely GOP primary voters? This article is doomed to be forgotten by Wednesday.
Whoever can beat obama.
See today that obama, is now playing the race card stronger then ever.
I like Romney and Santorum, but I don't think they would make very good Presidents. But it seems like that doesn't matter anymore. All that matters to many people is getting Obama out of the White House.
If Romney could show me more inspirational leadership... or Santorum could show me a little moderation and byparisanship... I may be able to vote for them. But at this point... Neither of them inspire me that much.
It may just come down to a "who do you NOT want in the White House" decision again for me this time (same as last time). That doesn't inspire me to vote. But I always do, no matter how uninspiring the candidates are. Even if I don't have anybody I fully want to vote for.
If Republicans make the same mistake the Democrats made the the whole time Bush was in office (only attacking the President instead of telling the people the good things your candidate can do)... Republicans will have the same degree of success the Democrats had when THEY were the party of "NO" and the party of negativity, and the party that could only ATTACK the President and put down everything America was doing. People don't like totally negative campaigns. They scare people, but they don't inspire them. Obama inspired people. If he can keep it up... and all the Republicans can bring is scare tactics, negativity and attacks... they will loose.
Grover Noquist made an interesting argument for why Republicans should elect Mitt Romney in a recent speech at CPAC:
All we have to do is replace Obama. ¦ We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We donÂt need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ¦ We just need a president to sign this stuff. We donÂt need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.
So what is NorquistÂs fundamental requirement for a Republican President? Apparently: doing what heÂs told:
Just like the last republican president, doing what your told makes you a great leader, even if your just following.
Isn't there a conundrum in there somewhere when a candidate adamantly claims membership and allegiance to a specific religious affiliation, but says their leadership will not be subject to the dictates of their respective religious leaders?
When I asked missionaries on my porch if Romney would be in violation of his membership were he to go directly against his prophet's teachings, they said it depended on the issue. They said they weren't worried about Pres. Romney violating Mormon tenets. However, when I asked if they were nervous about Santorum's possible allegiance to the Pope's mandates, they were very unsure of possible fallout.
And this is the elephant in the room for many: The gray area that hasn't been discussed.
Since Pres. O was such a shock to many of us Independents, we're leaving no stones unturned this time. I vote to do away with thd canned debates and have televised Q&A Town Halls- no restrictions, only civil rules.
The fear of the unknown is what is holding back many of my friends from fully endorsing Romney. He's too guarded and cautious. Give him some leash and an open forum, or this slug-fest will take us all down. We know Santirum will fight. Just put the two in the ring, no gloves. Otherwise, the O Train will run again.
I'm not sure Romney believes what Romney believes. He changes his mind on policies from one room to the next, one town to the next, one state to the next, one campaign to the next. "Change" should be his motto.
I know Santorum believes what he believes. However, some of it worries me. He's too vocal on his personal issues. When you're that vocal you can't help but have them become a key part of your agenda. He even claims that he a real conservative, yet his conservative religious values won't guide him. So...what's the poing of claiming to be conservative?
I don't have time, or energy, for the other two...
Here is what we would have with Romney in the White House:
Romney is compassionate - (How many would close their business & take employees to another city in order to help find an employee's missing daughter, or take 10 years of their life to voluntarily serve as a Mormon Christian Bishop to administer to the needs of others?)
Romney is good - (Why else would his family and friends love him so?)
Romney is squeaky-clean - (That's why we don't hear trashy relationships in his past).
Romney is expert in Business, Finance, Trade, and Turning Around Failing Organizations - (How else could he have taken an Olympics that was millions in debt, turn it around, and leave it with a $100 million surplus, or as Governor, take a state that was deeply in debt and leave it with A $2 BILLION Rainy-Day Fund, or in his personal business, make millions turning around at-risk businesses?)
In fact, it would be fair to say:
The fact that Romney paid a low income tax rate should convince the people of America that He knows what He's doing!
He knows how the tax system works!
He knows how money works!
He knows how business works!
He knows how to create jobs!
He knows how to balance budgets!
He knows how the financial system works!
AND,
He knows how the economy works!
He knows how the market works!
He knows how international trade works!
He knows how to eliminate waste spending & unproductive departments & agencies.
He knows how job creation works!
He knows how the political system works!
He knows how national defense works!
He knows how the borders work!
He knows how The Constitution of the United States of America works (he loves our Constitution and the rights and freedoms it is designed to protect and will seek to bring it back to wholeness, after being shredded by those who do not respect it!)
America, He knows how this country works!
And if we elect him to be President of the United States of America, together, we will show the World how it works!Â
"Tom in CA
Vallejo, CA
On the social issues - he is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-marriage between one man and one woman - what more do you want? "
Pro-freedom or choice is what more we want. He's pushing his religious beliefs on the rest of the country and in doing so, imposing on their freedoms and civil liberties.
What more could we want? A president who can put his religion aside and do what's best for HUMANITY not CHRISTIANITY.
Utah non mormons could take 'em or leave 'em. Mostly leave 'em.
I have not read one word about what it is going to like to have a Mormon President for the other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. You members might want to think about this. Even if Romney as President never said a word about the LDS church, every move and decision he makes right or wrong is going to come back on the church not on him. It is going to make it a very tough slog for our Missionaries out there in the field. Good, bad or indifferent, Romney as president is going to make it very hard for us other members of the Church. Even if we don't want to believe that a persons religion makes a difference in politics, it does and they will not always be a missionary moments.
