I love how Bronco recruits talent years before they sign. This is what makes BYU recruiting the best in the nation.

It's the same at every other school in the country mildred. All schools recruit and sometimes offer players before their senior year and sometimes even before their junior year.
The difference, as the coaches stated, is that becuse of the Honor Code and the strict non-football criteria, many potential recruits are eliminated from BYU's pool of players being considered for a scholarship offer.

EVERYBODY recruits talent years before they sign. There are better reasons Bronco gets good talent.

"two top offensive front commits." Just curious what you define "top commits" as? Are these kids 3-start or 4-start commits? I love my Cougs, but can resist pointing out the obvious over-hype in anything and everything BYU football. There's nothing to get excited about w/ the 2013 recruting class. It's equally tough to get excited with the 2012 class, when missions will, rightfully, take so many away from contribuing until the class of ...... drum role, please ..... 2015. Yowza!

"BYU tweaks its recruiting for 2013" I read the article and didn't read anything different. Bronco is smart to get on recruits earlier as his window of opportunity is smaller than most schools. In fact, Bronco is a genius.

Brandon, we realize things are slow now but there is nothing to poke fun of during this time of the year.

TJ that's a big no-no if they are offering sophmores.

Mildred in Fillmore,

You better check out what BYU was ranked in recruiting this year... not even in the top 50.

Best in the nation? Not even close.

Welcome to the comment board. When you have been here a while you will realize that Mildred is NOT a BYU fan. She is a troll who constantly posts inane dribble to make real Cougar fans look dumb. After 2 or 3 comments from her, you will see what I am talking about.

I'm struggling to understand what is different? (I know, I'm slow). It seems to me that BYU was out recruiting guys (Fainaka and Lutui were two that Gurney reported) down to the wire this year. That had to mean that they had scholarships available or they wouldn't have tried to sign those guys? Is this a smoke screen to tell folks that the 2013 LDS class is not as strong as LDS classes have been in the past?

BYU ought to just hold open tryouts down at the Provo MTC during p-day...that is about the size of the recruiting pool anymore. BYU is going to fall of the map in NCAA competition soon - I give them 6 years before calling it quits.

I would really like to see these Utah colleges focus on the talent in the 2A ranks. There are many unpolished gems out there. South Sevier usually has a couple of kids that could play D1 if given the chance.

BYU will be national champions 2012! Bronco is the best!

Who's going to give you the best chance at winning? How do you predict that? The fact is it's first come first serve and most big schools have offered their kids very early even in their sophomore, Junior years.

How much is in an athletes senior year? I think you should look at kids in their senior years. When's the right time to pick them? Look at Chad Lewis for you BYU fans- ALL Pro- but a defifnite late bloomer. Is he the rule or the exception?

Big schools should look to offer more kids in their senior years! I think too many are over looked.

Awesome news!! Coach Brocno's recruiting class of 2013 is already looking like a top ten ranked class.

And even better than being a top ten recruiting class each one of them will be a shining star of morality.

You're confusing BYU with the perennial PAC 10.2 doormat that the Utes are building on the hill.

The rundown Utes are already there and the pigskin version isn't far behind.

Brilliant comment. Right up there with comments Ute fans like Chris B. made before the start of the 2011 season promising Utah would go undefeated, win the PAC 12 and play for the National Championship.

"Mark it Down!"

"Write it Down!"

You said - "BYU is going to fall of the map in NCAA competition soon - I give them 6 years before calling it quits."

But if BYU was gone, what team would you and your fellow trollers rip on then? Weber State.

Brief history lesson. When LaVell Edwards took over as BYU head football coach in 1972, no one expected him to turn the team around like he did.

After BYU's All-Conference QB Gary Shiede graduated in 1974, people said, "That's it for BYU. They'll never again have a QB as good as him."

After Bronco Mendenhall took over as BYU Head Coach, following three losing seasons, people said, "BYU football is over. Mendenhall will do nothing."

So Patriot, I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you.

I can't wait to get my 2013 T-shirt. "highest standards in 7 years!"

These are all good sentiments, however without a conference affiliation BYU will get fewer top-quality players as the years go by. Utah being associated with the PAC-12 have already reaped the benefits in their recruiting this year. They will continue to benefit from their conference affiliation and will become an increasingly better team than BYU in all sports. Until BYU associates itself with a major conference, it will end up like Notre Dame which is a fraction of what they used to be in college football. That may mean giving up their ESPN contract. Their KBYU games are of such inferior quality that it becomes difficult to watch. Further, going independent for BYU football has dragged down every other sport at BYU with it. This has become too high a price to pay for their independence.

Coleman should be less concerned about how BYU's recruits compare to the u's and more concerned about how u keep falling farther behind USC and Oregon. As u are so anxious to point out, BYU is not in the 12-pack or any other conference. u are. How are you going to beat your conference schools when their recruits are better than yours? Better get used to middle of the pack.
