@Ute Mythology "Nonsense, the beating Utah put on #4 Bama in the
2009 Sugar Bowl resonates more than some fluke BYU win over Miami."In your house the Utah game does. In my house the BYU game does. Nationally?
Who knows. Hard to get a pulse of national opinion from the Utah bubble.

Ute,Trust me, I'm a lifelong Utah fan. But BYU's win over

Utah put on #4 Bama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl resonates more than some fluke BYU
win over Miami.
Uteology and Spokane Ute,Trust me, I'm a lifelong Utah fan.
But BYU's win over Miami resonated, and still resonates, in a way that this
season's Utah victory over USC does/will.Miami had won the
national championship the year before, and they were ranked #1 when they came to
Provo. The game was the coming out party of Ty Detmer in what would
be his Heisman Trophy winning season.Having lived outside of the
intermountain region for the last 20+ years, I can tell you that many college
football fans (not just BYU fans) remember that game. Not even all of the Ute
fan base will remember this season's win over the Trojans in 10 years.I love my Utes, but let's be reasonable...
@Virginians for BYUthrowing around high fives about just being ranked in
the final poll seems like the enthusiasm bar is set a bit low.----Who are you to judge?Considering Cougar Nation
throws high fives and chest bumps for one point loss and Sagarin rankings.
@Utah'95BYU's win over Miami was epic. This year's
Utah win over USC doesn't compare.-----The Miami
win was a fluke, BYU has beaten TWO P5 final ranked teams since, in 25 years. In 3 years, Utah has SIX wins: #3 USC, #10 UCLA, #11 Michigan, #11
Stanford, #19 Oregon, and #21 USC.
VirginiansI love how the BYU faithful are always moving the goal
post. "Well being ranked in the top third of all college football teams, is
good, but it isn't the top half of the top half, so not so good."If being ranked in the top 25 isn't that good, what does that say
about BYU who hasn't done that in 5 years?BYU fans you
can't sat anything in regards to this season, without denigrating their own
team.Utah won the head to head, and ended the season ranked. We have
better signature wins, and more award winning players. Life is tough, but
you'll make it through.
What is the real accomplishment of an end of the year ranking when a team is
ranked out of the top 5 or 10? If you are in the top 10 you were probably
playing for a conference championship or even playing in the playoff. If you
are beyond the top 20 teams it probably means you have a winning record but lost
3 or more games and were not a top team in your conference. If the NFL had
rankings for teams that were not in the playoffs competing for the championship
would anyone care? Utah.. I am happy for you that you ended the season being
ranked.... Congrats... But considering with 5 games left in the season you had a
potential to be playing for so much more... throwing around high fives about
just being ranked in the final poll seems like the enthusiasm bar is set a bit
Utah'95 - FPO, AEJan. 10, 2017 11:45 p.m.BYU's win
over Miami was epic. This year's Utah win over USC doesn't compare.---------Our win was more epic then your win, so there. Boy has this
@Worf......"These rankings are based on a- P5/NCAA monopoly."Better tell that to W. Michigan.
worf,If "rankings are based on a P5/NCAA monopoly," then how
have 15 non-P5 teams finished at least one football season ranked since BYU last
did it in 2009?BSU has done it 4 times.Houston, Central
Florida and Western Kentucky have each done it twice.Western
Michigan, South Florida, San Diego State, Navy, Utah State, San Jose State,
Northern Illinois, Southern Miss, Cincinnati, Nevada, and Tulsa have also done
it once.If those schools (most of them don't have the
name-recognition of BYU) can do it, then why can't the Cougars?
@Worf......"These rankings are based on a- P5/NCAA monopoly."Yes that is all the rankings are based off of all P5 teams and voters get
together and secretly decide to do whatever they can to not rank the mighty
cougies. LOL, funniest thing I've ever heard from a cougie fan
If BYU is a "legacy" program, and has the respect of everyone who
isn't a Utah fan, then why haven't they finished a season ranked in
the AP Poll since 2009?Since the Cougars last finished the season
ranked in the AP Poll, 64 other teams have.If BYU is as highly
regarded as many on you believe, then where is the "grade inflation" in
BYU's win over Miami was epic. This year's Utah win over USC
These rankings are based on a- P5/NCAA monopoly.
Uteology...BYU beat Miami when Miami was ranked #1. Miami ended the
season ranked #3.Miami won the national championship the year prior to BYU
beating them. Miami won the National Championship the year after BYU beat
them.Compare that to Utah Beating USC... USC was 1-2 and unranked
when Utah beat them.... USC finishes the season Ranked #3 after winning 9 games
in a row. USC ended the prior season @ 8-6.Hard to make a case that Utah
beating USC was a bigger win than BYU beating #1 Miami... When it
really comes down to it.... Both Utah and BYU won most of their games against
teams that finished the season with losing records and lost all their games
against teams that were ranked. 5 years from now I doubt anyone is going to be
talking about how great either team was in 2016....
Here we go again with the byu faithful saying they are better than Utah because
of a computer ranking or how they finished the season. If only they played each
other, or played the same opponents then we would really see. Oh, but wait....
@Virginians for BYUBeating an unranked 1-2 USC team is not the same
as beating the #3 team in the country. USC arrived at #3 by winning their last 9
games of the season by beating the exact same teams that were chalking up wins
against Utah...BYU beating the #1 team in the country that
ultimately finished @# 3 is still the best win against ranked competition in the
state....--------Nonsense! BYU has never beat a #1 team
in nation, as you said Miami was #3. This year, Utah lost to at the
time 4-1 Cal. So what? Utah beat unranked Michigan in week 1 of 2015, they
finished #11. Utah beat the same USC team as #4 Alabama and #12 Stanford. In 8 years, Utah has beat #3 USC, #11 Michigan, #19 Oregon, #10 UCLA,
#21 USC, # 11 Stanford, #6 Alabama, #7 TCU, #18 Oregon State, #25 BYU.Over same period, BYU has a win over #16 USU and #21 Utah.

burningblue:Lets edit your comment and ask if coog fans can follow
your advice:"To those of you that think the [coogs] are better
than [Utah], [you] are deluded. They finished ranked higher, won more meaningful
games and played in (and won) a better bowl. Give it a rest."Of
course, the big difference is Utah actually beat USC during the regular season,
while BYU actually lost to Utah. Yet, here you all are, propping up the coogs.
Not to rain on the feel good parade but I am guessing that real Utah fans
understand that Utah beat exactly 3 teams that finished the season with a
winning record... BYU, USC and SUU... And went 2-3 in the last five games of
the season... with only 2 of those teams ending the season with a winning
record... Utah lost to every ranked team they played... Not exactly the
breakfast of champions.... And no... Beating an unranked 1-2 USC team is not
the same as beating the #3 team in the country. USC arrived at #3 by winning
their last 9 games of the season by beating the exact same teams that were
chalking up wins against Utah...BYU beating the #1 team in the
country that ultimately finished @# 3 is still the best win against ranked
competition in the state....
Congrats to the Utes and Coach Whit.
Once again, Utah Utes are ranked top 25 in CFP, a perennial college football
power. The best team in the state of Utah again.Dominate
byu-p six years in a row and counting.Rankings do matter, top 25 3
years running...Go UTES!!
@ekute - merely commenting to the @unclerico comment that the U beating USC was
the best win EVER by a school from this state and that it was the only win over
a team finishing ranked #3. Go ahead and read all the comments and my comment
will make sense, you seem to be looking through rose colored glasses just as
unclerico was in his comment. As for living in the past, I'm not
stuck on the past and would love to see BYU play like that again today.
I'm glad the U has done so well in the past few years and hope they can
keep it up. And I hope that they can get past the November blues and make noise
nationally, just as I hope BYU can be relevant again on the national scene. If
the U and BYU are successful then everyone wins.

got ranked 29 by CBS and that’s not fair! But we almost won #74 California
and #88 Oregon that’s real neat! But they still won us darn it but they
were real good!-------Don't cry, I think we can
live without a CBS ranking. We also almost won #4 Washington and at
#17 Colorado. The difference, your program celebrates a one point moral loss to
Utah, we celebrate top a 25 team.
Not bad...UTAH is a member of a P5 Conference.byu-provo has not been
able to convince any P5 Conference to accept them as a member.UTAH has
defeated byu-provo 6 consecutive times.Your frustration is duly noted.

I agree that beating USC was big, and good for the U that the QB mess at USC was
still in flux. But @UncleRico, you've got your facts wrong. BYU beat then
#1 Miami in 1990, Miami finished #3 in the AP Poll that year. And beating the
current #1 and defending national champion trumps beating a 1-2 team. Beating
USC was a good win, and good for Utah that USC was still figuring out the QB
change in the 2nd half of that game. And I have to say that the Miami
game really was electric. I was in the 4th row behind the Miami bench and they
were the most foul mouthed, trashy bunch of guys I've ever seen. Some of
the players spent much of the game turned around and yelling at the stands. I
was glad BYU played well, the arrogance was gone by the time the game ended and
we all rushed the field. It was a lot of fun to be part of!
@Ute FansTo those of you that think the Utes are better than USC,
Pac-12 and Rose Bowl Champs, are deluded. They finished ranked higher, won more
meaningful games and played in (and won) a better bowl. Give it a rest.
Congratulations to Utah on the final ranking. You guys deserve it.
JellyRoll:I know it's tough for sme coog fans to process. The
end AP results and the too-early ranking you cite prove that all the blue brag
about legacy and national brand is just hot air. Legacy and brand never produced
a critical score over a ranked team or enough relevant, national respect to earn
votes. Face it, the trophies are dusty, you're now an unloved independant
and fleeting relevance just once, maybe twice, a year doesn't cut it. You
are . . . Army, in a blue frock.
Jello is Good,Downplaying the fact that Utah will be ranked and overjoyed
that byu got a mention. I've seen this before.
USC Trojans,We cleaned your clock...again.
Congrats to Utah for your AP ranking and being the 5th place team in the PAC-12;
keep up the momentum. I believe this is a realistic goal for your team and
coaches to squeak into the top 25 each year.Best of luck next year

ranked in over 20 years; and never beaten a team that finished number 3."And still top 2 in your obsession.Utah overall had a great
year, although there were missed opportunities. For the past 3 years they
appear to have leveled off in the low 20's. I hope the new attention to
offense with this OC will help give you some traction up.BYU also
received some votes. Although I am not satisfied with that, it is a marked
improvement from the last few years. Already pre-season predictions are coming
out. Again Utah is predicted in the low 20's. But where BYU received no
attention in the last few years, they have been picked by a pole posted in DN to
finish top 30.BYU/UTAH in LES will be big and will be tight, just
like the overwhelming majority of these games. The winner ends up in the top 20
at the end of the year. The loser does not.
We only got ranked 29 by CBS and that’s not fair! But we almost won #74
California and #88 Oregon that’s real neat! But they still won us darn it

Hurrah! Another top 25 finish where we were previously left out! Way to get it
together AP. They join the Coaches Poll and the only real poll that matters
(playoff poll) in proclaiming the Utes not only one of the finest programs in
the West, but in all of our great nation! Take heart my Cougar friends! You had
a fine season and although you struggled to get votes toward any of these polls,
you got just as many wins as the Utes this season. Yes, you lost to them again,
but you had many moral victories along the way and won a crackerjack of a group
of 5 bowl. Great seasons for both teams!
So what is that now? Three season in a row?
Utah beat a team that finished 3rd in country. Best win ever by a school from
this state. The other teams in the state haven't beaten a P5
team that finished ranked in over 20 years; and never beaten a team that
finished number 3.
Another season finished in the top 25.Par for the course.
