While not allowing corporations to abuse the visa program is extremely good, it
would also be good if those that seek the visas had similar opportunities at
home. They can't have that in slave-labor economies where there isn't
a meaningful minimum wage or labor laws that work for the population such as in
south and east Asia.
I read of study out of Utah State University several years ago that pretty much
came to the same conclusion. The visa system for getting high tech workers into
the country was being abused. There wasnt the shortage of high tech workers
that was claimed by industry. The study was presented to Senator Hatch at the
time and it got him to change his support for these visas at that time.
"Wedel said her husband eventually found a job in the health care industry,
taking a $40,000 pay cut.'It's a slap in the face to every
American who.. has 10 or 15 years of experience,' adding that firms want
that experience but don't want to pay for it."Well, maybe.
I have no idea what Mr. Wedel's situation was. But in many jobs, after ten
years, you don't have 10 years of experience--you just had the same year of
experience, repeated ten times. It does not follow that working for a company
for 15 years makes you far more valuable than someone who has only a year or two
of experience. And if the experience is in old technology, it can be even less
useful.A firm that does not hire you when you demand X dollars is
telling you that you are not worth X dollars to them. You may not like the
message, but that doesn't change the facts. You can hire on with someone
at the pay rate they offer or you can keep looking. Statistically, the longer
you keep looking, the harder it's going to be to get a job at ANY salary.
The only shortage of workers in this country are for those who are willing to
work for third world country wages. The law of supply and demand will facilitate
those companies without outside country interference... especially with
unemployment rates as high as they still are. This worker visa program is
obviously being abused and a factor in the gap between the haves and have-nots
getting larger.This abused program is ruining the work ethic and
work environment that made this country the envy of the world. Our lifestyle is
currently being marginalized and downgraded due to these 3rd world workers being
allowed to come in and be given American jobs at one-third less pay while all
our politicians do is try to expand unemployment payments to American workers
who truly want to work, while their jobs are being given away to outsiders.
It was very telling concerning these bills that "language was removed that
would have required all companies to consider qualified U.S. workers before
foreign workers are hired."It thus becomes obvious that getting
workers placed into these jobs for as little money as possible is their chief
aim... regardless of other consequences and regardless of where those workers
need to come from.There is very little company management patriotism
anymore. Everything is now determined by the almighty dollar. It's a sad
semblance of what our country was before... especially during and after WW2.
It's no wonder they are referred to as "the greatest generation,"
especially compared to our current overly materialistic generation.It all makes me and a lot of other people very, very sad when considering the
direction our society and country is currently headed. Change is immediately
I agree that companies should not be to hire H-B1 visa holders to replace U.S.
workers. However, U.S. workers also need to look at themselves and ask if they
are being good employees. Some employees have the entitlement mentality - pay
me but do not expect me to perform. Some immigrants simply outwork their
American counterparts. While some above have argued that companies
are not patriotic, an H-B1 visa holder is living here - spending most of their
paycheck here. How many U.S. employees are running down to Walmart to buy
something made in China because it costs 10% less. It works both ways.
Let's see Harley Davidson tech support... not enough US workers who can
handle the phone and a computer.... nope that doesn't pass the sniff test.
Here's my proof: Cell phones in every home and Facebook. To
use the law, I think the company should be forced to demonstrate that there is a
shortage of US applicant's with demonstrated skills that are hard to
replace. And demonstrate that the foreign applicants have those skills.
Seems like there are jobs available,. but not much demand for them. Better to
get a welfare check.
