Do Republicans also think it is outrageous when Israel trades prisoners with Hamas? Or when any other president in any other war has traded prisoners with the enemy? Or is it only outrageous (like everything else) when Obama does it. What were we supposed to do, leave him behind? If there's an issue about desertion, deal with that now that he's out.

But listening to Doug Wright on KSL this morning, one would think that we just don't know the truth. Well Doug, here, read the DNEWS BEFORE you go on the air and cover up for Obama!

""The United States does not leave our men and women behind in conflict."- Jay Carney

Then what excuse does the President have for abandoning Ambassador Stevens, and other U.S. citizens, in Benghazi, Libya? The calls for help went on for hours and both the President and Hillary Clinton did nothing until it was too late.

The 5 prisoners released were Taliban members captured in Afghanistan, Obama has announced that the US armed conflict combat role in Afghanistan will end this year, traditionally at the end of hostilities captured military personnel are released, which means these 5 prisoners would have been released soon anyway -

so, why not use them as leverage to protect the life of one of our own and get him back so he can get medical attention before it is too late?

And if we have been working on getting him back for the past 5 years, why is this deal so shocking to Republicans?

And whether or not he was doing what he was supposed to be doing at the time he was captured does not change the fact that he was a captured American soldier. Are people seriously suggesting that he deserved this or that we should leave him over there because he wasn't doing what he was supposed to be doing at the time of his capture? If he was a good soldier it would have been okay to strike the deal but because he was a bad soldier it wasn't? What's the point of bringing up his record?

Should we as a country do what is best for our soldiers and Veterans only when is convenient or always?

If doing the right thing at all times is the way we should conduct our lives and government. Then I guess we did the right thing and we will cross all other bridges when get to them.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl WELCOME HOME!!!

Why not use them [Taliban terrorists] to protect the life of ONE of our own? Because the five terrorists may already be responsible for thousands of deaths and are likely to go on the warpath to get revenge on American CIVILIANS for their captivity at Guantanamo Bay. I'm glad Bergdahl gets to come home regardless of whether or not he "walked away" but I'm worried at the price will pay later.

Why is this deal shocking to Republicans. Of course they knew we were working to get him back. That doesn't mean we ever thought that it would be on these terms. The dispute is legitimate. And when the five detainees kill again, I would expect a cover up from those that promoted and approved the exchange. No winners on this one.

Bowe Bergdahl is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

"I am ashamed to be an American"
"and the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools"
"I am sorry for everything"
"the horror of America is disgusting"

-A letter sent by Bowe Berdahl to his parents right before we deserted.

I think anyone who wants to criticize Bergdahl needs to take his place. Or send one of their kids to take his place. We keep sending these young men and young women into a war zone, over and over and over. How many tours have some of these soldiers been sent on? We tell them not to use their weapons on people who are shooting at them, and putting mines all over the place to kill them. We tell them if they do shoot anyone, they may be out on trial and go to prison for 10-life. PTSD will cause an ordinarily patriotic and sane person to do crazy things, like walk off, or write letters home to vent.
It’s not like when they come home with mental issues we do a whole lot for them. And both the democrats and republicans are to blame for not taking better care of our soldiers.
And then while suffering from PSTD, we call them up, and send them back again.
It is easy to armchair judge someone when you are safe at home.

The 2010 Pentagon investigation will never see the light of day...At least, not as long as obama is president.

I know people do what we do to bring Soldiers, Civilians, anyone back home that we can. However, for this Soldier Traitor, I hope when he comes home where ever he lands has handcuffs waiting, and that they hold a televised trial of how he compromised his fellow Soldiers by sharing everything about where he was stationed in Afghanistan. How many Soldiers or others got killed because of him compromising their situation, and the families that grieve because they lost a father, brother, sister, grandson. If they do not cuff him, and investigate, and send him to trial, we have failed those families that lost loved, we have failed those Soldiers that served with pride, and returned home with honor, and we have disgraced the POWs that served diligently that are unacoounted for.

Seriously, I thought the American policy was, "we do not negotiate with terrorists."
Yet Obama swings this deal at the height of the VA scandal.
American soldiers DIED trying to retrieve this deserter!
And FIVE murdering terrorists are released to go kill more Americans as well as others.
You Obama apologists honestly don't see anything wrong with that?

I don't criticize Bergdahl but I definitely criticize the the ridiculous and dangerous decision to negotiate a deal that puts 5 known really bad guys back on the streets.

Provo, UT

Thank goodness you are not in a position of power, idablu. If you were Commander in Chief, you, unlike any other Commander in Chief in history, would let your soldiers rot forever in a foreign prison, even when hostilities are ending. Fabulous.

Temecula, CA

Really I sent my husband over there. I somehow do not agree with you. MY HUSBAND and my friends sons/daughters/spouses should not have to pay because this man deserted his post.
Bowe Bergdahl walked into the arms of the Taliban, HE made his own choice. Should he have been over there at that point? Probably not, but many men (especially men) dont want to believe there is something wrong with them and they do not report possible problems. Bowe Bergdahl could have told ANYONE that there was a problem instead he chose to walk off his command, endanger other lives, and a whole host of other issues. So do I agree with turning 5 more killers lose for 1 who could care less about our men and women in uniform? No he should have been left there. He made the choice and his parents saying our government needed to step up are wrong... his parents should have found out the truth and quit blaming everyone but their son who chose this.

This is about the military code the soldier agreed to when he enlisted in the Army. The President and Secretary of Defense knows the code and mission statement of any military member and the purpose of that code for our country and the person that is serving our country. Mrs. Rice was the spokesperson for Benghazi when that action was questionable. This President even took Mrs. Clinton's place in being the one that got the call at 3 a.m. in the morning as that was a scenario of a discussion in 2007-2008, way before Benghazi. A President takes an oath of office to do the right things for our country,. Precedents have impacts beyond the law, standards and creeds with the public and nations as they believe the executive had authority to do so.

Time will tell about this guy. It's good for his family for him to be home, I'm just not sure the price was worth it.

I would have put tags inside these guys prior to release so they could be tracked. That way if they cause hate and discontent, we could use a drone and cause them hate and discontent. I have a feeling we have not seen the last of these five gentlemen.

If he did indeed desert, then he does need to pay.

Bush didn't even show up for guard duty, In the States, and your judging this young man.
Republican's hypocrisy know no bounds. We left men in Vietnam, we have learned, hopefully.

Tailban were our friends when we armed and trained them and called them freedom fighters,
when Russia was invading. They are not al qaeda.

Pleasant Grove, UT

The more difficult issue here is the prisoners at Gitmo. We've held them for over a decade without charges being filed and without trial. If they're simply prisoners of war, then we need to treat them as such. If they're criminals, then they're entitled to due process, which includes being charged and tried in a reasonable amount of time. Instead, we've held them incommunicado and with no release date or intention of trying them. It doesn't reflect well on us that we're treating them the same way that the third-world dicatorships we've been fighting treat their prisoners. It's time to either try them or let them go.

Idaho Falls, ID

You disingenuously twist my statement. We lost 6 good men trying to find this deserter. Releasing 5 terrorists so they can kill more Americans is NOT looking out for American lives. The decision to keep these guys in prison would save American and other lives.
The Commander-in-Chief has to make tough decisions. It is part of the job. He has to make the decisions that are in the best interests of the country. Releasing 5 high level Al Queda operatives for an American who defected to the Taliban a good decision? I don't think so, but time will tell.

And to HVH who says the Taliban are not Al Queda? On what planet? What an absurd statement!

What does Bush's guard duty have to do with this? Typical liberal MO. Deflect honest, legitimate criticism to Bush or what some other republican did. Even though they are not comparable, it still doesn't make it right. You gonna pull the race card next?

Whoa! Hold the phone!

You can't say that! Obama and the liberals just made him a hero.

I said it once, I'll say it again: I feel zero responsibility to risk my life, or the life of others (fellow soldiers) if the one we're being tasked to "save" voluntarily walked away/got captured.

It IS like John Wayne said: "Life is tough. It's tougher if you're ......."
